HOW CAN A CHRISTIAN CELEBRATE CHINESE NEW YEAR?

By Asst Ps Patrick Chan Yin

Chinese (or Lunar) New Year is this Sunday 22nd January 2023 and according to the Chinese Zodiac, it will be the first day of the Year of the Rabbit.

As I was passing by the West Coast market, a big statue of the Chinese god of prosperity was erected to greet the people and I could not help but notice some of the people bowing before it, perhaps whispering a quick prayer of blessing or prosperity to be granted upon them this year. Others were going around the statue to read the good (or bad) fortunes notes (and suggested lucky 4D numbers) of their Zodiac signs, that the so called famous Chinese fortune tellers/mediums gave, in the hope that this coming year of the Rabbit will be a more prosperous year for them. (I must admit that I too was very much tempted to read about my own zodiac sign and to see whether I would have a ‘favourable’ year!)

Amidst all this, one thought came to my mind: May we as Chinese Christians celebrate Chinese New Year, especially when there are aspects of Chinese New Year celebrations steeped in history of idol worship, pagan practices and the focus is on the ushering in of good luck and prosperity for the coming year? How much should we follow these old customs and practices?..........

VISION 2028

In the past ten years, the church has embarked on a vision discernment process once every five years, which would then guide us subsequently. This process ensures that we have a habit of seeking and listening to the Lord as a leadership team. Likewise, as we prepared to celebrate our 65th church anniversary in 2023, the Church Council and the Staff team embarked on a similar process over the past 18 months to seek the Lord in prayer and to hear one another with respect to the thoughts and aspirations for the church. We hope to articulate our discernment of the Lord’s leading for the church for the next 5 years (Jan 2023 to Jan 2028).

HOSTING EQUIPASIA STUDENTS

12 FEBRUARY TO 4 MARCH 2023

EquipAsia is a regional training program of our church to equip bi-vocational pastors with Bible knowledge and ministry skills. We are conducting Part 3 of the programme for a total of 20 students from Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Laos and Mongolia from 12 February to 4 March 2023. Seah Jiak Choo, Paul Lim, Eric Goh & Rev Dr David Wong will be teaching various sessions.

The EquipAsia students will be worshipping with us for two weekends and they will be hosted by various CARE Groups (CGs) for meals. The students are allowed to share with our members the spiritual needs in their countries for our prayers. However, please note the following:

1. No soliciting of funds

We strongly discourage the students from soliciting funds directly or indirectly for their needs and likewise for any CG or church member to give cash to them directly. We will provide them with food & lodging, as well as a token allowance for their needs. However, should any CG or member be moved to give, all such gifts should best be channelled to The Bible Church, Singapore, by designating them for the EquipAsia Programme. All contributions will be pooled together and may be used at the discretion of the EquipAsia leadership team, in part or in whole, to support the EquipAsia ministry.

2. No pictures on social media

If you happen to take pictures with the EquipAsia students, please do not post such pictures on any social media. Some of these countries have religious sensitivity and it may jeopardise the students’ ministry in the long run.

Let us welcome these Christian brothers and sisters in our midst and pray for the effective run of the third and final part of the EquipAsia programme. If you have any questions, please contact Asst Ps Gift Daniel at giftdaniel@biblechurch.sg.

• Learning to recognise and appreciate each other’s differences (gender and personality)

• Skills necessary for relationships to grow (how to listen, express feelings and resolve conflicts) and how to make each other feel loved and respected

• Developing emotional and sexual intimacy (in marriage)

• Sharing life's journey through goals, values and dreams

The course is designed so that couples will have ample opportunities to discuss and dialogue, as a couple, on critical issues regarding marriage, with the couple’s privacy respected. This course is compulsory for members who are planning to have their marriage solemnized by the Church* in 2023/2024, and is also suitable for pre-Christians. Your friends are welcome to join the course.
