It’s easy to go about our days without taking a moment to appreciate the beauty and art that surrounds us. Did you notice any meticulously done makeup as you handed out candy this Halloween? Have you observed the colorful leaves blanketing your lawn? Have you paused to take in the serenity of White Lake? Especially as the holiday season approaches and we get busy with shopping, planning, and hosting, it gets harder to stop and notice these little moments of beauty. As I remind myself – I hope that you too will slow down, breathe a little deeper, and stop to absorb the wonders that surround us. |

Of course, in my totally unbiased opinion, the ACWL-Nuveen is a great place to do this! Our annual Fall into the Arts Exhibition, featuring artwork from area school art programs, opens today and it’s a very impressive show. Sponsored by Ferguson Family Dentistry, this year’s theme is ‘Dreamscapes’ and the students created very unique fantastical visions of unknown worlds. Included in this exhibit is work by our 2022 Emerging Artist of Color Resident, Elijah Pierce. Although he wasn’t creating pieces to fit into the theme, it somehow works. His paintings are engaging, otherworldly, and impactful. I hope you’ll join us for the reception tomorrow, Saturday, November 5 from 1:00-3:00pm. And bring some cash! This exhibit is also a fundraiser for the participating school’s art programs and any support we can show these hard-working teachers would be much appreciated. We’re also looking forward to the annual Holiday Walk and our Made in Michigan Market on Friday, November 18. Alongside the usual artwork you can find in our retail gallery, we will have additional artist vendors set up from 2:00-8:00pm, selling ornaments, greeting cards, wool mittens, and more. We do have room for a few more vendors, so if you are interested in selling your work, please fill out this application. I also want to give you a little heads up: we are planning a ‘Classroom Art’ exhibition for early 2023, so if you have attended a class here recently and would like to be included in this exhibit, keep an eye out! We’ll be putting out a call for artists soon. Speaking of classes, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the loss of ACWL-Nuveen Artist Member and Teacher, Pat Miller. Pat was very involved in this organization for many years, and our staff and Board of Directors was so sorry to hear of her passing. We’ll be putting together an article about Pat and her impact on the ACWL-Nuveen, so if you have anything you’d like to share – thoughts, photos, etc., - please send them my way: nuveen@artswhitelake.org November is the month we mark Thanksgiving so please accept my thanks for all that you do for your family, community, and the ACWL-Nuveen! I hope you’ll take a moment for yourself to breathe in the fall scents, enjoy the crunching of the leaves under your feet, and to view some beautiful artwork in our gallery. See you soon, Erin Peyer, ACWL-Nuveen Director |
