Check out our latest updates

Welcome to our first newsletter! Our aim is to let you know about upcoming events and significant changes to the website. This will be released on an ad-hoc basis, so how long it takes for the next one depends on what's going on!

If you have anything you would like advertising on the website, or in the next newsletter please let us know at bugthorpevillage@gmail.com

Visit Our Site

The website

We hope the website will evolve as people provide new material for existing pages, or come up with ideas for additional pages. There are a lot more historic photos and additional history information since we first distributed the web address, so please do look again if you looked when it first went live.

Although the website and newsletter don’t have the interactivity of social media, this is a community project so everyone is very welcome to participate. From providing an advert for an upcoming event, to writing a piece about anything of local relevance that you think other residents would be interested in, your contributions will make this a success.

Since the coronavirus restrictions make it difficult to organise community events at the moment, it is a good time to put our efforts into developing the website. We are particularly keen to put up more historic photographs, so if you have any that you would be willing to contribute, please do contact us. We don’t want the originals, just a digital photograph of the original, or a scan, with a bit of information about who or what and when.

If you have any corrections, material or suggestions, please do contact us at bugthorpevillage@gmail.com.

If you know anyone with a connection to Bugthorpe who might be interested but who would have missed out on a leaflet because they don’t live in the parish, please do let them know about us.

What's On Soon!

The World's Biggest Coffee Morning- Bugthorpe!

Due to Covid-19 a number of Macmillan Cancer Support’s largest fund raising activities have been cancelled. People with cancer need help during this critical time and Macmillan needs funds to support them. We are having a home produce/cake stall on the green at Bugthorpe on Friday 25th September 9.30 – 12 noon. Please come and help Macmillan.

Harrison’s fundraising for Cancer Research!

Harrison Vale set up a stall piled with wonderful bits and pieces at the Treasure Hunt. Lots of people left the village hall lawn with an impulse purchase, and Harrison has now raised more than £300 for Cancer Research. He lost his mother to cancer and is undertaking various fundraising activities to mark her birthday. He will have another stall at the end of the drive at Corner Farm, Bugthorpe, on weekend afternoons, weather permitting (so possibly not 25/26th). If you see he’s there, stop to see if there’s anything you fancy!

Request for Material from East Riding Archives

For the last six months, and for some time to come, we have been and will be living through a historic period. East Riding Archives are collecting material about people’s experiences during “lockdown”.

The following is taken from their website, click below to contact them.

East Riding Archives

“We all have a story to tell about the current public health crisis, and historians of the future will be interested in researching how we experienced everyday life. Your help is invaluable, and we welcome contributions from all members of the East Riding community to create a permanent record of COVID-19 experiences in our archives.

What items are we looking to collect?

· Photographs

· Diaries or Journals

· Audio recordings

· Video clips or video logs

· Poetry or stories about your lockdown experiences

· Leaflets, posters or handouts

Records can be in handwritten, printed or digital format.

We are interested in documenting how individuals and families coped with being under lockdown. We ask how much did our towns and villages change? What did your day look like? Other topics can include, but are not limited to, life events, the impact of social distancing, family life, community heroes, the Thursday evening ‘Clap for Carers’ and NHS thank you messages. We are seeking documented experiences relating to shopping, schooling, work, hobbies, your daily activities and feelings.”

To find out more, including ways to submit material, visit the Archive’s website above.

Results of the Treasure Hunt!

Thank you to everyone who came along to help launch the website by walking around Bugthorpe trying to decipher cryptic clues!

We hope everyone enjoyed themselves. If you are still puzzling over some of the clues, the answers can be found on the website.

We are very grateful to Pasture Farm Produce who donated the Yorvale ice-creams. They sell a wide range of produce including fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs, logs and peat-free compost, and can be found 2 miles from Bugthorpe on the Scrayingham road. A link to their Facebook page is on the “local businesses” page of the village website.

We were really pleased that ten groups submitted answers to the treasure hunt, and approximately twenty children scoured the village for feathers, mini monsters and other items to complete the scavenger hunt.

£122.74 was raised for a village notice board which we hope will complement the website, and be accessible to people without an internet connection. Permissions are still being sought for the board, so don’t expect to see anything too soon. We will keep you informed of progress.

The final scores were out of a total of 46, but not everyone used their ‘Golden Stars’ so they gained 2 bonus points. And the winners are..........

JOINT FIRST:

Hetty, Liz and Steve Full Sutton 42 points

The Pearson Family Kirby Underdale 42 points

JOINT SECOND:

Liz and Ian Jones Bishop Wilton 39 points

Spinks and Wells Bugthorpe 39 points

Congratulations!

Reminders

Oil Syndicate

Garrowby Estate has an oil syndicate to help residents get a cheaper price for their heating oil by combining their orders.

This is managed by the Halifax Estates office and orders are placed on the first Tuesday/Wednesday during the months of February, April, June, August, October and December.

Once the amount of oil required is known, prices are obtained and the company with the most competitive quote receives the order.

If you wish to check whether you live within the area served, find out more, or join the syndicate, please contact Denise at the estate office on 01759 368219 or DWhitaker@halifaxestates.co.uk.

The next order will be placed on 6th October.
