Just when the dust was starting to settle from moving the studio, I decided to take on another move: my home. Though it’s only across town, I committed to doing it in less than two weeks. (I know, crazy!) Needless to say, I’m feeling a bit stressed. OK, a lot stressed! But I finally figured out why, and what I can do to reduce it, at least a little. What I realized last night is that, it’s not the gazillion things I have on my plate that’s causing most of the stress—though, of course, that’s not helping. What’s really causing it is that I’m facing so many unknowns right now, both with where things will go in the new house and how we’ll move them over there. I’ve got so many questions! Where will put our offices? Will the couch fit in the new living room? Where will the “cat room” be? I’m also wondering: What furniture should we move and what should we keep for staging? Should we hire a professional moving company or use a local guy? When will we have time to pack? The list seems endless. And, yet, each question I answer makes me feel a little less stressed—and that’s how I know I’m onto something. After I picked up a load of moving boxes, I started to feel some relief. At least now I had containers to put all of our stuff in. Then, John and I figured out a plan for packing, and I cleared off all but essential commitments for the three-day weekend. Again, another weight lifted. Gradually, I’m starting to feel like “I’ve got this!” The same goes for art. There’s nothing quite as paralyzing as “blank page (or canvas, or design board, or…) syndrome.” When you don’t have any idea where you want to go with a piece, it’s really hard to get started. Once you’re able to get something down, however, ideas usually start to flow. That’s why the first step of the Zentangle® process is to place a pencil dot in each corner of your paper so it’s no longer blank. It’s amazing how well it works! We all have times when it’s hard to start a project, whether it’s moving a home or painting a picture. If you need a jump-start, I hope you’ll consider renting a space at the studio (where you’ll find lots of encouragement to make those dots!) or signing up for a workshop (and, yes, we happen to be having a Zentangle® workshop on September 6th!). I also hope you’ll consider joining us for our Two-Year Anniversary Celebration and Pie Contest on Saturday, October 5th, from 1:00-3:00 PM. You can check out Purple Crayon’s new digs and dig into some delicious pies! While you’re not required to bring a pie to participate, the more pies we have, the more fun it will be! I look forward to playing with you! —Pam Robbins, Owner |
