Hello!

This is the first oldpeoplebrand Media newsletter. Every other Wednesday, my friend Camden Dusenbery is going to be sending a movie, podcast, youtube video, article, and album for you to check out! It’ll all be stuff that we find value in, and that we think you may like as well. I’ve always wanted to do something like this, and I’m excited to hear feedback from all of you. It'll be a work in progress! On a side note, the support we received on Spa & Retreat was beyond belief. Thank you all for being a part of it! Have a nice week, and feel free to DM or email us your thoughts on the newsletter!

MOVIE

Waves, 2019

Trey Edward’s Shults 2019 film, Waves follows a family who must overcome tragedy and loss. Unique in many aspects, Waves is cut into two halves after a family falls apart in the most unexpected of ways. For the first 70 minutes, scenes often play out like music videos, which probably wouldn’t work if it wasn’t for the stunning cinematography. Though it oftentimes feels like a chaotic mess and hyperbolizes to the fullest; viewers end up appalled as they are dropped into the latter half of the film. You will feel every single emotion throughout, thanks in large part to the score (Frank Ocean, Animal Collective, Tame Impala, SZA to name a few) and the constant emotional roller coaster as this film manages catches emotions in such a realistic manner. Many of the events that take place are inflated when compared to the average young adult’s life, yet, we can nearly all relate to the feelings depicted throughout this film. At its core, Waves is nothing short of ambitious and beautiful; a moving film that left me with nothing but a hole in my heart.

PODCAST

How to Design a Life – Debbie Millman (#214) The Tim Ferriss Show

Debbie Millman: designer, writer, brand consultant, President of American Institute of Graphic Arts, and best known for her podcast “Design Matters”

(Can also be found on the podcast app)

MY TAKEAWAY:

The first 20 minutes are more so a biography, Debbie then begins to discuss rejection throughout the early stages of her life. My favorite parts include advice to her younger self at 24:00, and the self-fulfillment/actualization paper Debbie discusses at 1:27:00. The main emphasis I got from this podcast was persistence and the will to make your main goal a reality!

YOUTUBE VIDEO

I’ve been watching Harald for a few years now because I can’t get enough of his filming style. He travels to many locations across the globe, and essentially uploads 30+ minutes of raw footage, which is a breath of fresh air when compared to the over-edited & spliced down videos I’m used to seeing! I find that especially now, as we practice social distancing, it’s extremely fascinating to watch him walk around Nepal and interact with the locals. This is one of my favorite videos from him, but there are a plethora of others to check out.

The Dunning-Kruger Effect

MY TAKEAWAY:

The Dunning-Kruger effect is a great example of cognitive bias and why we’re often unaware of how much we don’t know. Once I began to search for and better understand these blindspots, I started noticing flaws in my own thinking and beliefs! The First Rule of the Dunning-Kruger Club… YOU do not know you’re in the Dunning-Kruger Club :)

ALBUM

Safe In The Hands of Love, Yves Tumor

Safe In The Hands of Love, an album with a great blend of genres that leaves you, for the better or worse, puzzled from start to finish. Notable highlights include the core tracks “Noid”, “Licking an Orchid”, and “Lifetime”. New Yves Tumor album -- Heaven To a Tortured Mind -- out next Friday, April 3rd!
