IASFA

This is just a short newsletter, mostly to let you know about this promotion of free and 99 cent books from the IASFA. If you are a fan of science fiction, particularly military science fiction, and fantasy, you should get on their mailing list to get notice of all sorts of cool promotions. And, if you are a writer in those genres, you should also check out the organization, because it is filled with people who have been very, very sucessful as independent authors. Craig Martelle, who runs the IASFA, also runs the 20BooksTo50K group and conventions. Anyhow, click on the pic to be linked to their latest promo, which includes my book, Forced Conversion, for just 99 cents.

Father's Day: 3-Story

Collection Now in Print

I recently decided to make a print version of my Father's Day Deluxe 3-Pack Collection for an upcoming con. That book, available in ebook format for a decade, combines my award-winning short memoir, Father's Day, with two other tales of mine about fathers and fathers-in-law.

A simple process, so I thought. After all, there's even a button on KDP that you can toggle to turn an ebook into a print version. Sure, there's the usual format fixes to make sure each story starts on a right-hand page, but nothing I wasn't used to. Amazon, however, bounced the book over concern that the phrase 3-pack would confuse readers into thinking they were getting a pack of cards or three separate print books or somesuch and that angry consumers would give me bad reviews when that didn't happen. Nevermind that I've never had any comments to such effect on the ebook. Plus, not having the other two stories available separately made the 3-pack reference inaccurate in their minds (or, at least, in the mind of the algorithm which generated the review).

That isn't the biggest deal in the world. In retrospect, I kind of wish I'd said "3-story collection" instead of "3-pack" a decade ago, but, of course, you can't make the title of the print book different than the title of the ebook and you can't change the title of a book post-publication. Sure, I could republish, but then the reviews and history and all that won't automatically flow through and the countless links in bios and other books I've put out over the last decade would no longer be correct.

Liza, the customer service rep I dealt with, was nice and friendly, but there were still hoops to jump through. I made the other two stories, Tree of Enlightenment and Work Mode, available separately--that was easy to do and by dropping them in Kindle Unlimited, I can use them for occasional promotions now, too. I changed the cover and descriptions to reflect the change.

The new print book got approved today and I'm hoping the ebook version changes will also be blessed soon. Being an idie author has unexpected challenges some days.
