This week at Titirangi School

Week 9, Term 2 ~

1st July 2022.

Message to Julie

Tēnā koutou e te whānau,

As Matariki continues to move through the sky, it has given us all time to pause, reflect and come together as a school whānau.

It is with this in mind that we would like to pay tribute to Julie Lynch, our amazing Principal, who is leaving us to take time to focus on her health and her family.

Julie has been a lynch pin within our Titirangi whānau, leading our kura through some of the toughest times over the last few years. Her drive; focus, dedication, passion and guidance has given the tamariki that are travelling through our classrooms the surety of a wonderful pathway with their learning.

The life of a school Principal isn’t one of a typical “work week”, the continual pull of so many facets of school life is something that is quite hard to fathom, but something that could never take the smile or light hearted chuckle away from Julie, and for those of us with her every day, we were fortunate enough to be part of those light hearted highs.

It is a blessing that all of our tamariki know Julie as “Julie”, this first name basis is how she will be with us and always a part of the Titirangi whānau.

Aroha nui Julie,

Your Titirangi School whānau.

Matariki Dawn Ceremony

Thank you to everyone, who braved the cold morning to support our Matariki Dawn Ceremony. It was an amazing turnout.

Huge congratulations to our Kapa Haka group and Student Council speakers, whose performances were outstanding. Thank you to all our teachers, especially the Year 1 and Year 2 teams, whose tamariki performed for us. And special mention to Vicki Moffat and Whaea Natalie, who were so integral to the event.

I would also like to acknowledge our PTA and Fiona and Scott from Harcourts and their team of helpers, who provided free kai for the whole school community. A superb effort from the PTA, The Harcourts Team, volunteer parents and the teachers, set everything up, served and cleaned up afterwards. We really appreciate this wonderful, and substantial gesture.

School will finish at the normal time on Wednesday the 6th of July

If you have not booked your Parent Teacher interview, please contact your child's teacher directly.

Hero Mid-year Online Reporting:

Your child’s progress has been updated throughout the last two terms. This is the online report for your child and will be referred to during your Parent Teacher conference.

The school has posted out a “Help Sheet” to support your families with this new way of accessing student progress. This would have come to you through Hero.

Additionally -  Click the link here to go to the Help Sheet.

Pick-up and Drop-off on Kohu Road & school driveway gate closed from 2.30pm

Please be aware of areas that are yellow lined or our neighbours driveways when dropping-off or picking-up your child from school.

This area can get very congested and difficult for children to walk, cross and be seen when coming to and leaving school.

Additionally, the school's driveway gate will be closed from 2.30pm daily. This is to protect the children as they leave school for the day, as we have had vehicles coming and going while children are crossing the driveway/parking area and they are very difficult for drivers to see.

Let's Celebrate Learning

Our Year 1 and 2 classes have recently visited Te Uru Gallery

The classes have had the opportunity to look around the gallery and visit the education centre.

Each child has made a beautiful 3D whetu (star) from card using mixed media techniques to celebrate Matariki

Interschool Chess Summary By Xinyi, Jimi, Alex.Z , Year 5

Last week we went to a chess tournament at St Paul's school. There were 31 teams!

When we got there, we started to run around not doing much. When it was finally time to play, we sat down at our table and waited. Almost everyone else had an opponent! Our first opponent was Chaucer C and they were REALLY easy because it was only their first chess tournament so they were a little nervous. Everyone easily won and it was a 4-0 sweep.

Our next opponent was St Paul´s A team. They were really good and we lost by half a point. If you win, you get a point. If you draw then you get a half point each and if you lose then you lose all your points.

Our next opponent was a different story. First, we had to go against ACG Sunderland team B. They were very challenging and insanely good. Only Brian and Jimi won. ACG Sunderland played very well and none of them made illegal moves. If you make an illegal move it means that you need an illegal card. If you get 3 illegal cards then you lose the game. We beat our next opponent 3½ -½ and moved on.

We then played St Paul´s C team who put up a good fight in chess and we ended up drawing with them.

We then played our final game against Lincoln Heights and that was our downfall. Jimi went up against a 7 year old (who is better at chess than he looks). Everyone of us lost except Brian, and Brian won immediately with the 4 move checkmate! If we had concentrated more on the last round, we could have gone to the National Chess Tournament in October.

Xinyi said: “ At least we were in 9th place! Since last time we were 19th place.”

In conclusion, we had a blast at St Paul's school. We will definitely go to the nationals next year.
