the weekly Round-Up

Dear Round-Up Readers,

What a week it has been for women in the US. A leak from the US Supreme Court in Politico was confirmed to be a first-draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito, writing for a majority, stating that the Court is overruling Roe v. Wade, which declared a woman's constitutional right to an abortion in 1973.  If this draft is issued as the official decision, it would be unprecedented and would take away a fundamental right for millions, and the language used calls into question far more than abortion access.  If you want to learn more and understand what you can do to help protect women's reproductive rights, read this from the ACLU.  Other interesting reading on this topic:

  • Is there a workaround through Congress? Possibly, Congress can move to "codify" which means to enshrine a right or a rule into a formal systematic code in the form of federal law.

  • Looking beyond abortion, the reality is childbirth and raising children is expensive in the US, and women are given little support.

  • U.S. abortion war spotlights women's risk from online tracking. This is actually frightening, online search can be weaponized if abortion laws change.

The 11th week of war: as the Ukraine war grinds on with deadly daily battles the definition of victory is unclear, and there is speculation that Putin may shift strategy on May 9, "Victory Day" a somber and patriotic holiday in Russia that celebrates the Soviet victory over the Nazis in World War II. As you are likely following this news elsewhere, from now on, Round-Up will move to only covering efforts to help from hospitality.

  • Toiletries Amnesty is working to get large donations of toiletries and hygiene essentials to the people on the ground in Ukraine, as well as those seeking refuge across Europe, can your business help?

Business News:

  • How long can the hot jobs market last? U.S. employers added 428,000 jobs in April, the same as March. The unemployment rate remained at 3.6 percent. Federal Reserve’s efforts to slow inflation might hit hiring as well, though not yet, as the labor force shrank in April.
  • More teens are working than ever before, helping to fill service jobs. Better hours, and better pay are luring kids; companies make it work by offering more training.
  • How the decline in immigration is impacting the jobs market. Listen to this from the Wall Street Journal immigration reporter.

Women, business, and personal growth:

  • CNBC Interviewed Geoff Ballotti, CEO of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, live from the SHaD finals to talk about the boom in leisure travel demand amid rising gas prices.

  • Choice Hotels launched a program to help women become franchisees.  Called HERtels (very similar to the name of a media platform we love, yes?) the program will provide dedicated training, education, mentorship, and financial assistance to advance and empower women entrepreneurs as Choice Hotels franchisees.

  • Travel Weekly interviewed the legendary Danny Meyer with an A-List cast of travel editors (NYT, T+L, Nat. Geo, Town & Country, etc). In the second installment, Meyer talks about the difference between service and hospitality.  If you missed it, here is the first installment.

  • Forget Net-Zero, the first Carbon Positive hotel is being built in Denver: the new wedge-shaped Populous hotel won't have parking spaces, and the developers are reforesting 5,000 acres of land to make up for the carbon they are producing.

  • Two women are appointed to CEO! Read about Laura Lee Blake, Esq., the new President and CEO of AAHOA, and Danielle Schneider, the new CEO of Pathfinder Hospitality.

  • What will our meals look like in the next 10, 20 even 100 years?  Bon Apetit speculates. How about some 3D-printed chips with your cricket tartare?
