Art is for Everyone

Days Like This by Amanda Long

Days like this on summer's edge,

we pause to breathe and softly hedge.

The fleeting warmth, a gentle call,

tomorrow's winds may bring the fall.

As summer comes to an end, one unmistakable sign is the sound of the water fountain just outside the gallery. Have you noticed how the sound changes around this time of year? With fewer kids climbing the rocks and splashing in the water, the peacefulness of the fountain truly shines through :-). But that calm is about to be interrupted in the best way possible, thanks to this weekend’s festivities for the September First Saturdays celebration. Join us and support this fun arts, culture, and heritage festival if you can!

Just like the seasons, our hours are changing too. Starting September 16, the gallery will be open by appointment Monday through Wednesday, and from 10 am to 5 pm Thursday through Sunday.

We’ve got about a month and a half until our fall closure, and we’re packing in some great stuff before then! A photography exhibit, a ceramic sculpture exhibit, a one-line drawing workshop, and a live painting session. Oh, and I'm preparing for our annual (dare I say it...) Christmas (...there, I said it) Art Market which kicks off on Saturday, November 16, alongside the Chamber’s Platzl Late Night Shop event—so mark your calendars!

Wishing you the very best of late summer. May your skies be as blue and clear as they are here in Kimberley today!

WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW?

We welcomed two new artists to the gallery since our last newsletter. I'm thrilled to introduce you to Fernie-based ceramic artist Steve Cho and Calgary-based beadwork artist Joy Bacon!

Seoul-born Steve Cho, now based in Fernie, has a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design from the University of Manitoba and a background in cabinetmaking and fine arts studies at the College of the Rockies. Currently, Steve is part of the Elk River Mountain Homes team and he is pursuing a carpentry apprenticeship. In Steve’s artisanal venture, ‘this and that studio,’ he sells his timeless pottery at local markets, and he has earned recognition for his distinctive creations.

Joy Bacon's initial inspiration to explore beadwork came from an exhibition of many beaded objects in a gallery in Santa Fe. A serendipitous encounter with an article about the artists behind these creations gave a glimpse into their processes, inspiring Joy to research and experiment with various styles of beadwork. Over the years, she has beaded an eclectic array of objects, including ceramic pigs, golf clubs, shoes, and many other items with personal meaning. Joy takes particular pleasure in incorporating humor and thought-provoking concepts into her projects.

We have added a several new artworks to the gallery since our last newsletter. Here is a glimpse of some of the new artworks by Al Price, Joy Bacon, Lianna Swanson, Rob Toller, and Steve Cho.
