HERB FRESH

Fisk Farm Herbs Newsletter

April 8, 2020

Good Morning Herbies,

I’d like to welcome you all to the first “Herb Fresh” bi-weekly newsletter!

WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE FARM

With all the uncertainty in the world with COVID-19, it is about persistence and resiliency.  I keep planting because it is what I love to do.  It also helps that I find peace in the greenhouse.  The plastic walls and ceiling are both physically and metaphorically like the shallow aperture lens setting on my camera.  All the craziness on the outside is muted and fades in the background and I am mindful and focused on what is in front of me…the baby plants that need my full attention and nurturing, to grow a healthier future for our planet and humanity.

Along with the seedlings, I have my eye on the Stinging Nettle and Curly Dock colonies along the river.  Most people are probably cringing right now thinking about nurturing the weeds and pesky plants, but they are impressive medicinal and nutritive plants.  I've checked the Mullein I transplanted last year and started extra seedlings.  Why do I have Mullein on my radar?  It is known to be an exceptional lung and respiratory herb for helping dry coughs and the soft pillowy large leaves are a toilet paper substitute.  I personally don't have any experience using it as a medicinal or a TP substitute but may test it out and report back to you in the next newsletter and let you know if it works.  No gross details just a yah or nay.  In a week or two, I will harvest fresh Parsley and Chives and make Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya.  The fresh herbs in the recipe make the flavors sing on my taste buds.   Click on the “What’s Fresh” links below and it will redirect you to the fiskfarmherbs.com website where you will find more information, about these herbs, like herbal actions, recipes, videos and links to more scientific data.

A special thanks go out to Two Ravens Farm and Mewaldt Organics for partnering with us to offer fruit and vegetable seedlings alongside our medicinal and culinary herbs with the Sliding Scale Discount and Home Delivery.  If you haven't already placed an order, you are invited to click on the Order button below.

If you are interested in learning more about medicinal herbs, I highly recommend the Chestnut School of Herbal Medicines free mini-course.  I'd love to teach you all, but honestly, I am a budding herbalist myself and the folks at Chestnut are phenomenal.  The offer expires in 5 days so don't wait too long to register.  You will find a link on my Facebook page Fisk Farm Herbs.

Well, that is all I have to say this first round.  Go GET YOUR HERB ON and prep those garden beds.  The new babies like moist loose soil with lots of organic matter.   The majority of medicinal herbs are perennials, plant them in a spot where you won’t need to mess with them for several years.  Once they mature, they tolerate a little neglect and don’t need as much pampering.

“Herbalism is based on relationship-relationship between plant and human, plant and planet, human and planet.  Using herbs in the healing process means taking part in an ecological cycle. This offers us the opportunity consciously to be present in the living, vital world of which we are a part; to invite wholeness and our world into our lives through awareness of the remedies being used.”
