Insect Demise in the News, Locally and Globally
Every pollinator garden is an important one! And we need more!
A new comprehensive review of 73 historical reports of insect declines
from across the globe reveals dramatic rates of decline that may lead to the extinction of 40% of the world's insect species over the next few decades, with
insect biomass declining by a staggering 2.5% a year.
The main drivers of species declines appear to be (in order of importance):
i) habitat loss and conversion to intensive agriculture and urbanism;
ii) pollution, mainly synthetic pesticides and fertilizers;
iii) biological factors, including pathogens and introduced species; and
iv) climate change.
Fortunately, we are seeing an uptick in national reporting about this catastrophic issue, with February coverage on this report
by The Guardian, CNN, BBC and others.
Kristina Lefever of PPRV was invited to discuss this critical issue of insect decline
in a JPR interview "Entomologists Mull The Grim News About Insects",
with Lynn Kimsey of UC Davis and SOCAN's Alan Journet.

At this Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) general meeting
we will explore what is happening to insects and why.
Join us for presentations by Kristina Lefever, Pollinator Project Rogue Valley,
Alan Journet, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now,
and Robert Coffan, Southern Oregon Monarch Advocates.

Volunteer Profile: Hilary McDonald
Hilary McDonald has lived in the Rogue Valley since 2013,
when her family relocated from Flagstaff, Arizona to be near family.
She became involved with Non Toxic Jacksonville in 2018 when she realized pesticides were being used in Jacksonville's parks where her young son played.
In December 2018, Hilary began producing PPRV's newsletter.
Hilary holds a Bachelor's Degree in Geography from Humboldt State University
and a Master of Education Degree from Northern Arizona University.
She works at Rogue Community College and enjoys travel, gardening, reading,
dog walks and spending time with her family in the great outdoors.
We appreciate her!

Pollinators' Pick
Flowers Can Hear the Buzz of Bees!
A new National Geographic report indicates flowers can “listen”
to the pollinators buzzing around them --- and sweeten their prize!
Researchers studying evening primroses “found that within minutes of sensing vibrations from pollinators’ wings, the plants temporarily increased the concentration of sugar in their flowers’ nectar.”
The bowl-shape of flowers acts as an acoustic ear, giving plants an
evolutionary advantage by responding to the presence of their pollinators.
