crossing the threshold

Next week, I cross a threshold. I will finally have as many published novels as completed novels sitting in drawers that will likely never see the light of day. Writers often call these "drawer babies" -the books that don't make it out of the drawer (or out of their computer folders).

I'm not sure why the publication of my fourth novel feels so momentous. Maybe this book signals a move from hobby to profession, although I've always taken my writing seriously.

I think it's more that I've moved from trying to achieving. I have faith that I can put together a good book. With each novel, my books are slowly becoming more personal. Five Tries to Get It Right is fiction, but the characters are a part of me. I also believe the writing in each novel I pen incrementally improves (which is why I won't publish the early ones).

I'm still writing as much as ever. I've got three novels in some stage of progress, two of them sequels to Tequila Midnight. They'll definitely make it into bookstores, my drawer-baby period is long past.

creative genius

I love sharing the stories and books of my author friends. Kathleen Basi and I know each other through the Women's Fiction Writers Association. I wanted to feature her, in part, because my novel, Five Tries to Get it Right is about two women on a journey. Kathleen's novel, A Song for the Road, is about a special kind of journey, a road trip.

In the novel, one year after the death of her family, Miriam Tedesco embarks on a musical pilgrimage armed with her husband's guitar, her daughter's cello, and her son's unfinished piano sonata. Hopeful, honest, and tender, A Song for the Road is about courage, vulnerability, and forgiveness, even of yourself, when it really matters.

There is a reason music plays such an important role in Kathleen's novel. In addition to writing fiction and nonfiction, she is a composer and a choir director. Her song Come, All You Thirsty won the 2022 Association of Catholic Publishers Song of the Year.

Kathleen Basi's novel, A Song for the Road (Kindle version) is on sale May 6-14 for $1.99.

book recommendation

A novel that brings characters together through a reading list. An interesting structure that uses fiction to explore the lives of fictional characters.
