the weekly Round-Up

Dear Round-Up Readers,

Busy leading up to ILTM in Cannes!  Am headed there tomorrow morning and would love to connect if you’re going to be there too. Just reply to this email and let me know.

Exciting to have travel companies sharing news this week––Langham Hotels and Cunard hosted events in London – and there’s more of it, so let’s get to it!

Business, Women, and Random Trends:

  • Four-Day Workweek Trial is a Success: New study of a 4-day trial reveals revenue increased over 8% over the six-month trial period for 33 participating companies. On the employee side, respondents reported less burnout, less fatigue, and an increase in physical health.

  • Instagram Is Over What do you think? The Atlantic says the app has gone from cool to cringe. The article is an interesting read, especially in the age of the "Influencer" and what that might mean.

  • Looking to leave Twitter? Speaking of social media, NPR offers a round-up of possible Twitter replacements. The only one I have tried and am on is the beta of Post. Have you replaced Twitter?

  • B2B Win: Tesco Supermarkets Creates Online Swap to Help Suppliers Reduce Waste and Cut Costs One of my favorite stories of the week––this is a great, collaborative solution other industries can learn from!

  • It’s Good to Be Difficult: Shonda Rhimes’s Leadership Lessons I missed this terrific Glamour interview when it ran last year, so sharing now. One of my favorite lines: "I never thought there was a problem with being called bossy, bitchy, or difficult. That might be the way I was raised. I was the youngest of six, with a lot of sisters. It just never occurred to me “bossy” was a negative thing."

Travel & Hospitality news:

  •  Women Leaders Call For A Better Tomorrow At WTTC Global Summit In Saudi Arabia The tourism industry employs 54 percent of women in the sector but only one in five Tourism Ministers worldwide are women and under-represented in senior roles in many hospitality and travel companies.

  • More Travel Trends for 2023 Insight from Booking.com reveals travelers are feeling much more optimistic about traveling in 2023 compared with 2022 ––with almost three-quarters (72 percent) of customers saying that, despite uncertainty and possible chaos, travel will always be worth it. Other trends: going "off-grid", virtual travel, culture shock, wellness, splurge travel...read more in Globetrender.

  • Food Trends for 2023! Wondering which are the hot mushrooms (maitake), the new "it" cuisine (Filipino), and the dessert of the year (Baked Alaska!) read more here.

  • Hyatt to Buy Dream Hotels You may have seen this news elsewhere, but this is BIG and Hyatt is definitely on the move! I'm looking forward to learning more about Hyatt's plans at ILTM this week.

On hertelier this week:

Big welcome to our new subscribers! The story in Forbes, How Women Are Changing The Hotel Industry, keeps bringing new readers! Super excited to have you here. It's been "tech week," so let's beam ourselves in!

  • Overcoming Obstacles: Stacia Harvey Randall Can you relate? Sometimes we create our own obstacles, Human Resources Director Stacia Harvey Reynolds reflects on her career and how she learned to get out of her own way.

  • Castell@College Comes to the UK! Key Takeaways from Debut Session Across the Pond Three leading female executives: Carmen Hui, Jan Hazelton and Janine Marshall share stories from their careers with students at the University of Surrey, thanks to Professor Emily Ma. I moderated the session and this article offers highlights.

  • Does Anyone Care About Etiquette Anymore? As we head into the holiday season, does anyone care about manners? Columnist Nancy Mendelson unpacks.

  • Growing Through Grief: Mary Celeste Beall, proprietor at Blackberry Farm speaks with former Food & Wine editor Dana Cowin.
