ROMA's SEGMENT

Roma is an integral part of the team and she always has the last say with a tip or a quote

Each month we will bring you a segment from Roma – our youngest member of the team (and don’t tell Nige but definately the cutest)

Hi all

Welcome to the Hardyards Water Delivery and Lifestyle Property Services Summer newsletter.

Firstly those new to us, we will not be bombarding you with newsletters or emails and only send one for each of the seasons, so four per year. The idea is to help you with what you should be thinking of doing with your lifestyle block or water supply for the current season. If you do not wish to receive our newsletter please click the unsubscribe button and you will be removed from the newsletter email list however you will still be able to receive our invoices.

We want to thank you all for supporting us and allowing us to help you out over the last twelve months. We certainly appreciated your business and we would love your feedback on the newsletter and any ideas on topics you want to know a bit more about.

We hope you and your family have had a happy holiday period and have a safe and properous new year. Lets all hope for a less crazy 2021

Tanks and Fires

The picture above is a weed mass located in a concrete tank a couple of weeks ago. This came out of a 23,000ltr concrete tank that unsurprisingly had not been cleaned for a few years. The weed mass had established itself inside the tank and eventually started growing up the pipes preventing the water getting through. You can imagine the plumbers surprise when confronted with this. To give you some idea of the actual size here it is against a vehicle

Our second big summer topic is Be Fire Safe

Recently we attended a fire safe evening run by the Appleby Fire Volunteers. I can recommend anyone living rurally to attend one of these evenings or if you want to do something as a residential community as we did in Galeo Estate the local fire service will run an evening for you.

Things to remember are provide a 1-2 m fire break around around your home. You dont want a fuel source right up to the house ie those lovely bark gardens between the lawn and the house, and instead consider using crushed shell or stone. Keep the type of plantings against the house to lower growing, fire resistant plants, dont plant the taller trees against the house that are fire fuel. Remembering that the fire service only bring with them 8-10,000 ltrs and the rest of the water to fight your house fire comes from your reserve tank. If you have self levelling tanks where the water levels across all of your available tanks, remember you need to keep sufficient water in them for the fire service to use should it be required.

Can a fire appliance access your property? the big take aways are the same things we need when delivering your water so if your property is fire smart, it will also be water smart. The main points are:

  • Driveways need to be clear of vegetation
  • Clearance of all vegetation 4m wide x 4m high is needed
  • No overhanging branches to drag on the top of the truck
  • No branches restricting truck width and mirrors
  • Adequate turning for large vehicles - concrete trucks are not as big or heavy as a fire/water truck

If we dont have clear access we may not be able to help you

Summer growth

We have have a fantastic late spring for grass growth with the warm weather and good rain. This has seen pastures respond with significant growth. While the best time to apply fertiliser is the Spring and Autumn, all is not lost if applied during the Summer. The picture at the top of the newsletter is a patch of our lawn where we rinsed and emptied an Activise fertiliser container on the lawn in mid March this year. You can see the visible difference in growth despite not having had much rain prior to or post tipping it on the lawn. Response such as this does require a reasonable starting base in the soil and getting a response like this is more difficult on the hard clay pans on many pastures around the Tasman Moutere area.

Roma's segment

Roma supervising dad filling a new pool for the owners to enjoy. Roma's message is that remember once the Summer water restrictions kick in we are not allowed to fill your pool. So make sure you have this in hand prior to the restrictions starting. Thinking about the above fire safety message and that pools provide a significant additional water source in times of fire, Roma recalls how pools were invaluable in helping to protect property and homes in the Tasman fires in 2019.
