What is Cohousing? Cohousing is an intentional community of private homes with lots of shared spaces including a Common House. The residents have shared values and enrich each others' lives. There is a great balance and respect for privacy and shared living.
What is a Common House? It is a vibrant, active and essential central node for gathering together and building community. It's in the act of coming together, socializing and saying "hello" that keeps the community together and thriving. When will we be able to move-in? The finalized rezoning application was unanimously approved by Guelph City Council in February 14, 2023. We are currently in the site plan approval and detail design stage. We are hoping to break ground and start construction in the spring of 2025, with occupancy in 2026.
Who is making all the design and community decisions? A key feature in cohousing is self-governance. The answer is... "we all are making the decisions". We are working together with our architects and cohousing consultants to make the design decisions for how our site, shared spaces, Common House and individual units will look. We are also working together as a group to create community policies and guidelines as to how we will live together. We use a system called sociocracy for shared governance and decisions making.
