Lots of active transport activity from Council at the moment! Two big ticket items were up for endorsement at Monday's council meeting - a design for the final stage of the Wood-Weller Bikeway, and the proposed concept design for Railway Tce South. Reports from the meeting were that unanimous support was received for the Railway Tce South concept to progress to the detailed design stage, while the proposed final stage of the Wood-Weller Bikeway will require some further work before being re-presented in the coming months for endorsement. Both reports, including submissions from UBUG, can found and read from page 150 onward, here. These projects are two of six that form Year 1 of 5 in the Walking and Cycling Plan Implementation (see below). Funding for the delivery of these projects was recently out for community consultation as part of the Unley Council Business Plan. Apologies for not circulating this via email - we hope that you were able to provide your support for these investments if you so wished! |

Council is also pushing on with their aim to install 12 new bike rails and one pole vault in 2022-23, a total of 26 bike parks. To date, eight bike rails and one pole vault (18 bike parks) have been installed at the following locations: Unley Community Centre - 2 rails (4 bike parks) Duthy Street Deli - 1 pole vault (2 bike parks) Just Down the Road cafe (on Greenhill Road) - 2 rails (4 bike parks) Council Depot - 2 rails (4 bike parks) Soutar Park - 2 rails (4 bike parks)
Also underway are pedestrian improvements at the Marlborough St and Cambridge Tce intersection including landscaped pedestrian refuges and DDA compliant kerb ramps to better support walkability in the area. |

Whether you're a history buff, a beer enthusiast, a budding gravel rider, or looking to explore new routes in a social setting, there's a ride for you in the next few weeks. This Saturday 27th May kicks things off with the Brews & Bars cycling tour. Jointly hosted by the Unley Museum and UBUG, the tour will take riders on a discovery of some of Unley's past (and current) breweries and bars - did you know that Unley has been home to at least seven breweries?! Starting at the Unley Museum and finishing at Suburban Brew, the tour celebrates the launch of the Museum's Brews and Bars exhibition on the history of Brewing in Unley. 11:00-12:30 this Saturday. Further details here. |

Next up is our monthly social ride and June will see us heading north to Bowden with an 18 km clockwise loop. Taking in some of the many bikeways and other other scenic routes, it will be a great way to learn how to connect these bike paths while enjoying the beauty along the way. A super relaxed pace, a social environment, and coffee guaranteed. First Saturday of next month! 9 am at the Unley Council Carpark. All ages, all abilities. |

And, in addition to the regular monthly social ride, June will also see UBUG's first adventure ride, tackling more off-road conditions and requiring certain bikes/tyres*. *The route has been rejigged to make this first edition more accessible. The ride will be exploring some of the hidden gravel paths of the Adelaide parklands, with mostly relaxed sections and plenty of alternative routes. Please get in touch on social media or at ubug.secretary@gmail.com for more details including suitability of your setup! Link to the event page here. |

UBUG would like to thank Tahlia, Jessica, Matilda and Emily from the Living Young Reference Group and Diane Salvi from the Unley City Design Team for the opportunity to attend the screening of Regenerating Australia and contribute to the post-film discussion. It was a great chance to reflect on the aims and role of our group and its advocacy, and how these fit in with environmental, social, and economic regeneration. Key themes to emerge from the discussion and subsequent reflection on active transport were its potential as an equitable climate and mobility solution, its ability to address our sedentary lifestyle and associated health impacts, and that it's both really enjoyable to do and allows you to interact with your surroundings and fellow community members! A thought provoking film and discussion. Thanks to all involved! |
