MOVIE Dunkirk, 2017 Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk (2017) details the remarkable and heroic evacuation of Allied soldiers from Belgium, Britain, Canada, and France. Surrounded by the German army from Dunkirk’s beaches, soldiers wait in anticipation before enemy forces close in. I loved Nolan’s unique spin on a “war film.” He includes three different perspectives throughout, telling the story non-chronologically. Consequently, there is no lead character, and at first, this puzzled me. Yet, once the plot proceeded, I enjoyed Nolan’s distinguished storytelling. The film is a spectacle from start to finish. Filled with gorgeous, breathtaking shots, in combination with real warplanes and real crashes, it’s quite the viewing experience! Couple this with a terrific score that had my heart racing, I found myself anxious for most of the 106-minute runtime. Marvelous and bold, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk defies conventional war films. |

PODCAST The Paradox of Efficiency Renowned historian, Edward Tenner, is an independent writer, speaker, and adviser on technology and culture. His novel Why Things Bite Back: Technology and the Revenge of Unintended Consequences is an international bestseller. LINK: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-paradox-of-efficiency-edward-tenner/id470622782?i=1000467505238 *Can also be found on various podcast platforms* MY TAKEAWAY: This TED Talk put into a podcast allows you to either listen or view it with the video/presentation. Running 14 minutes in length, Tenner addresses the ramifications of completing things as rapidly as one can. I’ve heard similar notions as the one he discusses, but this one is more insightful. Rather than merely giving reasons why not to do certain things, he backs it up with concrete preventive methods to avoid the given situation. Through numerous anecdotes, it’s easy to understand the advantages of creative mistakes and serendipity. |

There’s plenty to love about Gucci’s recent campaign video. Consisting of A$AP Rocky, Iggy Pop, and Tyler, the Creator, their eccentric personalities are on full display. The sweater vest and suits are impeccable. The retro aesthetic reminds me of the ’60s. Harmony Korine (Gummo, Spring Breakers, and The Beach Bum) did a fantastic job, maximizing the modern LA mansion to its fullest while creating a sense of playfulness in each shot. To sum it up, it’s an elaborate dance party, accompanied by a few parrots. |

ARTICLE Benefits of Cold Showers Wim Hof Method LINK: https://www.wimhofmethod.com/benefits-of-cold-showers MY TAKEAWAY: The brief article covers the benefits of cold showers, so, instead, I’ll explain the Wim Hof breathing technique I use daily during the latter part of my shower. Step 1: Take your standard, warm shower. Step 2: Before getting out, take 30-40 deep breaths* until your limbs tingle, or you become lightheaded (no, this is not dangerous) *A very fast inhale as deep as you can go. Think of breathing into your belly and not just chest, much like the ones you do right before holding your breath underwater. Followed by just letting the breath fall out of you. These should be done quickly. Step 3: After, hold your breath for 15-30 seconds, turn the shower as cold as you can stand. Step 4: Remain in for at least 30 seconds It’s important to note there are no exact rules on how to do this. Do what works best for you. I cannot stress enough what this simple technique has done for me. It works like a cup of coffee, often better. It’s somewhat daunting, but that’s the point. Putting yourself through this acute stress each day results in your body (and mind) becoming more resilient, a process known as hormesis. Give it a chance, even if it’s just for a day! |

ALBUM Savage Mode 2, 21 Savage & Metro Boomin
After Savage Mode in 2016 and Without Warning in 2017, the latter including Offset, 21 Savage and Metro Boomin are back with Savage Mode 2. Throughout the 15 tracks is Morgan Freeman, who reads “Intro” over one of the coolest album trailers I’ve witnessed. They couldn’t have picked a better person for the job. After the amusing opener, 21 begins laughing, and instantly I picture a villain ready to wreak havoc. The foreboding lyricism that yielded the Atlanta MC to fame on Savage Mode returns on “Runnin” and “Glock in My Lap.” However, this time around, they slow things down for a few songs. “Mr. Right Now” features Drake, as the two rap about their female partners. Neutralizing the lacking lyricism is Metro’s catchy hi-hats and hypnotizing reverse synth melody. Metro’s menacing production shines through on “Many Men,” my favorite track. Savage fires line after line, while rapping at to those who wish death upon him. As expected, Metro’s killer 808s and thumping kick drums highlight Savage Mode 2, along with 21’s wicked and hefty lyricism. The pair provides, yet again, another great album for any hip/hop enthusiast. |
