Aloha mai e nā koa o Poʻi Nā Nalu,

Welcome to the Fall 2020 semester! Like a koa--a warrior--you have been persevering with strength and determination, and we commend you for your persistence. We hope that you and your ʻohana are safe and healthy. As always, we are dedicated to supporting you through this challenging time, and we will continue to do our best to keep you connected academically, professionally, and culturally as we move forward.

E ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Kākou

Let's Speak Hawaiian

Our Huaʻōlelo o ka Mahina series features a new Hawaiian word/terminology each month. We hope that you will utilize these terms in your everyday conversations by simply plugging them into your sentences. Before you know it, they will become a natural part of your vocabulary!

MAULI OLA

Definition: n. “Breath of life, power of healing.”

Kihe a mauli ola: sneeze and live

Ola: Life, health, well-being, living

(Pukui & Elbert, “Hawaiian Dictionary”)

Usage example: "Now more than ever, we must take care of our mauli ola."

("Now more than ever, we must take care of our breath/health/well-being.")

Poʻi Nā Nalu's ʻŌlelo Hoʻoulu (Inspirational Saying)

Piʻi ka nalu, hokua ka nalu, poʻi ka nalu, a pae.

The wave rises, the wave crests, the wave breaks, then one reaches the shore.

This ʻōlelo hoʻoulu (inspirational saying) was written especially for Poʻi Nā Nalu Native Hawaiian Career & Technical Education Program. While its underlying meaning can be interpreted in a number of ways, we highlight it here to illustrate the way Poʻi Nā Nalu participants embark on their individual academic journeys.

Piʻi ka nalu - Just as a wave rises, we accumulate knowledge, skills, and experiences that serve as a foundation for our future endeavors.

Hokua ka nalu - Just as a wave crests, we as individuals and as a whole reach high points in our educational journey—we understand our purpose, we create meaningful relationships, and we achieve goals that propel us forward.

Poʻi ka nalu, a pae - Just as a wave breaks, we use all that we have garnered in our experiences to move forward into the next steps of our lives. Examples of this are graduation, transferring to a four-year college, and landing a dream job. As we arrive ashore, we continue on our paths to pursue next steps and new goals to improve our lives and those of others.

May this ʻōlelo hoʻoulu serve as a guide, a reminder, and an inspiration as you strive to be the best scholar you can be for yourself, your family, your community, and the lāhui.

KILOHANA

Student of the Month

Cedric Kawohikūkahi Adversalo

Tell us about yourself.

Aloha mai kākou! ʻO Cedric Kawohikūkahi Adversalo koʻu inoa piha (My name is Cedric

Kawohikūkahi Adversalo). No Āliapaʻakai mai au ma ke ahupuaʻa ʻo Moanalua (I’m from Āliapaʻakai [Salt Lake], Moanalua where the Hoʻeʻo wind blows). My current major is Liberal Arts, but I plan to have my credits evaluated for ʻIke Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Studies): ʻŌlelo Pathway when I graduate.

What are your future plans?

My career goal is to become a kumu ʻike Hawaiʻi and maybe even a kumu ulana lau hala on the side. When I started at HCC, I was only doing Hawaiian Studies because I wanted to learn more about my culture and also find a way to use this knowledge to help and teach others. I know the Hawaiian community needs more help and support, but I had no idea exactly what and how I was going to do this until I met the staff at Poʻi Nā Nalu. They’ve helped me to realize that going into education would be the best option for my goals. They’ve supported me with my internship at the Bishop Museum, applying with Phi Theta Kappa, and with financial support for my summer classes. The thing that I really appreciate the most is all of their advice and mentorship with my academic and career plans. I plan on continuing my education at UH Mānoa to get my BA in both ʻIke Hawaiʻi and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi along with a degree in Education.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In ten years, I hope to have all my degrees and/or certifications completed as well as in a job already where I can help to provide free, or at the very least, affordable opportunities for kānaka to learn their culture and mother tongue, whether it be through the public school system or through some other education. Mahalo e Poʻi Nā Nalu for all your support!

“My growth through this internship experience has been so fulfilling. I have been able to actualize my dreams with those in the auto body industry and I am ready to take on more tasks to further my success. My speed in identifying damage to vehicles that have been in accidents, along with inputting such information to create estimates for customers on the spot, has given me a confidence that I am grateful for and will ensure my productivity at any job site.
