GREETINGS & NEWS

May 2020

Hello!

I hope this e-mail finds you well. Since the last time I sent out a newsletter, the world has turned upside down. I am physically healthy but struggling mentally. Normalcy seems so far away that it is hard to stay positive. My days are full of ups and downs, which is why I am particularly happy to share one of the 'ups' with you. Maybe it will make you smile...

#COVERREVEAL

LIA & LUÍS: WHO HAS MORE? (illustrated by Giovana Medeiros and published by Charlesbridge) is on its way to the printer. And it looks beautiful!

The book tells the story of Brazilian-American twins Lia and Luís. The two have different opinions about which one of them has more snacks. Luís’s bag of snacks is bigger than Lia’s, but his biscuits are much smaller and lighter than Lia’s croquettes. After comparing their snacks in a variety of ways, they finally have an answer.  Through the power of storytelling, Lia & Luís entertain kids while also encouraging mathematical thinking.

In fact, there was a whole lot of mathematical thinking (and some non-mathematical eating) involved in the creation of this book...

The final product is the result of the hard work of many people. A big thank you to Giovana Medeiros for bringing this story to life with beautiful characters and lots of colors, to Alyssa Mito Pusey and Marlene Kliman for their expertise and guidance, to Jon Simeon for his talent and patience, to Jordan Standridge for securing some amazing book launch events (check dates and locations here), and to everyone who was part of it somehow.

And now, the moment you were waiting for…

THE COVER REVEAL!

LIA & LUÍS: WHO HAS MORE? is part of STORYTELLING MATH, a series featuring diverse characters using math during everyday activities. The project was developed with TERC, under a grant from the Heising-Simons Foundation, and includes works by several authors and illustrators. To learn more about the theories that led to the creation of the series, read this article, by TERC’s Senior Scientist Marlene Kliman.

Lia and Luís will be out and about on October 13th and can be pre-ordered anywhere books are sold. (Though I suggest ordering it from your local bookstore.)
