An evaluation of our new driver profile!
New findings of our study to validate the Driving Insights Profile have been released. A major fleet company took part in a 6 month study after management raised concern about one of its sites being involved in many more crashes than others. Managers wanted to see whether the Driving Insights Profile could successfully identify the high-risk site amongst other lower risk sites, but the research team were blind to the crash history. Over 300 truck drivers took part in the study across four different sites.
The results showed significantly higher scores for Safety Management, Angry Driving, Time Pressure, and Risk Awareness for the high-risk site compared with the lower risk site. Overall, drivers believed that safety is perceived not to be a key priority by the company, tended to hold negative views of other road users and responded by taking risks, felt time pressured and reported that they were more concerned about getting the job done and less concerned about the risks of driving for work . The company is now taking steps to focus on the root cause of the issues that the Driving Insights Profile revealed with changes to policy and procedures.
PsyDrive are delighted to be working with TfL to investigate the psychological contributors to pedal application error (PAE) amongst London bus drivers. TfL has described pedal confusion as “the manoeuvre where a driver confuses the acceleration pedal with the brake pedal resulting in either sudden unintended acceleration (UA) or harsh braking”. Drivers involved in PAE incidents think they are braking rather than accelerating and may ‘hard brake’ after an initial press of the accelerator pedal, leading to rapid acceleration in some cases. The research aims to review the literature, observe PAE incidents and propose effective training and guidance materials for London bus drivers.
The Official DVSA Guide to Better Driving on its THIRD edition
The third edition of The Official DVSA Guide to Better Driving will be available in book and eLearning formats this summer. Written by Lisa Dorn and published by TSO on behalf of DVSA, Better Driving takes you into the mental landscape of drivers. You’ll explore the effects of attitude on driver behaviour and learn to manage stress and anxiety through real-life scenarios, safer driving strategies and test-yourself questionnaires. Significant updates to the text include the latest evidence of the human factors in driving automated vehicles and how the role of the driver is changing.
