Long-Term Maternal and Child Outcomes Following Postnatal SSRI Treatment |
Researchers recognized a gap in knowledge around SSRI use (a commonly used antidepressant in the treatment for postpartum depression) and the long-term outcomes for women, partners and their children. Liu, Ystrom, & McAdams (2023) conducted a longitudinal cohort study in Norway to examine the long term maternal and child outcomes following SSRI treatment. The study included a total of 61,081 mother-child dyads, of which 8671 had a diagnosis of postpartum depression and 177 who received SSRI treatment. Data was collected on all participants, from pregnancy up to postpartum (childhood) age 5. "Overall, the analyses suggested that postnatal SSRI treatment was associated with a reduced risk of subsequent maternal depression and child externalizing behaviors" This study is among the first to examine the long-term outcomes of SSRI treatment, and reflect the importance of effective interventions for postpartum depression. Feature of the Month: Baby-Friendly Council of Newfoundland Labrador |
The Baby-Friendly Council of NL is a committee made up of diverse people from across the province that are dedicated to support the initiation and duration of breastfeeding and improving maternal-newborn practice. They are supported by the Perinatal Program of NL, and help promote the global campaign, "Baby-Friendly Initiative". Baby-Friendly NL are involved at many levels, including education, policy, and practice. For families, this can look like resources to assist in feeding decision-making pre-natally; healthcare practices that support early skin-to-skin in the early newborn period; and the policies for communities to provide supportive feeding spaces for all. October 1-7th 2023 is World Breastfeeding Week. This year's theme is, "Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a difference for working parents". Conversations are driven by the need for policies to provide parents and caregivers with the time, resources, environments, and cultures to establish and sustain breastfeeding and support transition back to work. These policies of focus include paid maternity leave, child care access, and supportive workplaces for breastfeeding. To learn more about Baby Friendly NL, please visit their website linked below: |
