This weekend we remember what happened in Sausalito 82 years ago when a swampy shoreline was turned into an active shipyard that produced 93 cargo and tanker ships for World War II. After only three months from the onset of contruction of the shipyard the first ship was launched on June 27, 1942. Innovation drove this unprecedented pace of construction. That legacy of innovation continues with dozens of patents issued to Marinship companies since then. And the Marinship shipyard remains active to this day! |

New...Working Waterfront Interviews |
SWWC will be presenting occasional interviews with interesting people on our working waterfront. In this interview we talk to Rashad, graduate of the Spaulding Boatworks 101 apprenticeship program. Young people complete an intensive year of training in electronics, power systems, cutting edge and classic construction techniques - and much more. Donors in Sausalito and beyond contribute funds for this innovative program that provides full-time stipends to each participant. And when these young people graduate, they’re flooded with good job offers, and many stay to work right here in Sausalitos vibrant working waterfront. Rashad was hired at Bayside Boatworks and is now an integral part of their team. |
After several weeks on the shipways at Bayside Boatworks, she is launched. First consrtucted in 1922, Wanda, at 90ft in length, is now in good shape to flourish in our waters for another 100 years. Restoring classic wooden yachts like Wanda make Sausalito's waterfront a special place. |

Houseboat maintenance at Richardson Bay Boatworks |
This attractive houseboat from Isaquah Dock is hauled out for work on her hull. The owner of this floating home is fortunate. The hull is made steel. Most floating homes in Sausalito have concrete hulls. Since the passing of Ian Moody and the closure of Aquamasion yard where most of the concrete barge hulls were built. Houseboat owners now face a ticking timebomb. Eventually they need to be repaired and replaced. Alternatives exist but mostly these are methods that buy some time, not a real fix. |

Summer camp opportunities for community youth |
This summer there are two opportunities in the Marinship for summer camps for kids. Both include sailing time on the bay and will be an unforgettable opportunity for your child. Spaulding Marine Center and Call of the Sea both have fun programs: |
Teach kids how to weld or fabricate! |
Marin Made, a non-profit industrial shop is looking for a (retired?) welder or fabricator to create a program to introduce kids to fabrication skills. Individual welding stations are available and ready to be used. Prior to Covid, Marin Made had a program that taught young girls how to weld. |
And Marinship does have a history of women welding in the Marinship! |
