Update #14 2022

Welcome to another update from the Sturt's Steps Project Team.

Sturt's Steps is a strategic project funded by Infrastructure NSW to deliver 12 elements to Corner Country NSW that will provide amenities for visitors to increase tourism to the area. Kicked off in May 2020, it is aimed to be completed by June 2023.

Read below and visit our website for all the updates from the team.

New Parks, New Experiences, New Opportunities

This email is sent to the stakeholders of the visitor economy in the Corner Country area of NSW, SA & QLD so we are preaching to the converted when we speak of the amazing opportunity we have in building the tourism opportunities in the area. Sturt's Steps is really starting to take form and has enabled more stories to be told, created more interest in the region as well as created more reasons for people to come to the area.

In addition to the Sturt interpretation, we have always said that Sturt's Steps will bring all history alive for visitors to understand, experience and connect with. Milparinka now has 12 different areas of interpretation to engage its visitors and the Sturt's Steps additions in Tibooburra will complement the town's plethora of content to explore. Read on to find out where the project is up to...

New Interpretive Centre in Milparinka

The Percy and Doris Fripp Rock and Mineral Centre

The geology was not only noted by Sturt and his men but has been of considerable interest to all who traverse the Corner Country. What better way to support the knowledge gathering of visitors than to have a space dedicated to geology.

Percy and Doris Fripp travelled around Australia pursuing their love of fossicking. Over many years a collection of about 3,000 samples of rocks, minerals, fossils and gemstones, plus Aboriginal artefacts and old bottles, was amassed.

During the 1970s Percy and Doris Fripp established Nelligen Rock and Mineral Display, at Nelligen, near Batemans Bay. The museum was very popular and its legacy continues as the collection was relocated to Milparinka in October 2022 as part of the Sturt's Steps collection.

Percy and Doris' last trip was to this area, so it’s very appropriate that Milparinka be the resting place of the display. Click here to see the updated photos from the construction of the display.

Geologists Visit Milparinka

The arrival of the gems to Milparinka has enabled geologists Bob Brown & Nancy Vickery to visit and assist with the sorting and interpretation in the new centre. Bob & Nancy have already published a geology guide for Milparinka, Tiboobura the whole of Sturts Steps. They are now dedicating their time to making the new centre a perfect addition to the Sturts Steps.

New Camp Ground Open!

NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service has opened a brand new campground on the Sturt's Steps journey. Tielta Camp Ground is perfectly positioned along the inland route and offers fabulous new amenities and great access. You can find more information here.

New Corner Country YouTube Channel

The Safer Driver Series is now fully available on a YouTube Channel for the public to gain easy access to. Please provide this link and information to visitors that are wanting to come to the area. The videos have some important information about driving in the outback which often comes as a surprise for our customers that have not driven in the outback before.
