The Fight to Protect Women's Health in the U.S. Women's March continues to mobilize in support of women's right to access the drug mifepristone, a pill used with misoprostol to end pregnancies before the 70-day mark. It is used not only in abortions but also in treating miscarriages. A Trump-appointed judge in Amarillo, TX, is expected to decide whether or not the drug will continue to be available to women within the next few days. While misoprostol can be used without mifepristone, it is less effective and can carry increased medical risk when used alone. Right-wing fanatics' war to ban abortion is hurting women. Educate your families and friends and show your community that you support women's right to abortion. You can also donate to Women's March by following the link below! UN Human Rights Council Deeply Concerned over Deaths of Black Men in U.S. On February 11th, the United Nations Human Rights Council said they were deeply concerned about violence directed at African American men in the U.S. and requested ongoing information regarding the investigations into the deaths of Keenan Anderson and Tyre Nichols at the hands of police. They are also looking into "regulations applicable to the use of less-lethal weapons vis-à-vis applicable human rights standards." UN experts stated that they believe the use of force in these cases violated international norms. While UN involvement is a positive development, is it likely to yield any results? In 1947 the NAACP sent a petition, compiled and edited by W.E.B. Du Bois, to the United Nations that outlined the numerous areas where racism negatively impacted African Americans' lives in the U.S. Those areas included: "voting rights, criminal justice, education, employment and access to health care." It seems problems continue to repeat themselves. Data from the Pew Research Center shows that in 2017 African Americans made up 33% of our prison population despite being only 12% of the population of adults in the U.S. Comparatively, white people made up 30% of the prison population but 64% of the adult population. Hispanic people were 23% of the prison population but 16% of adults. Racism is still affecting African Americans' health. Research published in 2021 by the Journal of Women's Health shows that infant mortality for African Americans is 10.9% compared to 4.7% for white babies. It also shows a 37.1% maternal mortality rate for black mothers compared to 14.7% for white mothers. Obesity and heart disease are also significantly higher for African Americans. Recently we've seen legislation to roll back voting rights in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, and Oklahoma. Conservatives have also been active in bringing court cases challenging affirmative action in both hiring and college admissions. The UN's recognition of the severity of racism in the U.S. is good, but change will only come from the inside. It's the responsibility of all Americans to call out racism when we see it. We all need to speak up and demand that all Americans be valued and treated equally, with dignity and respect.

Menstrual Trackers Could be Used to Prosecute Women On 2/16/23, the governor of Virginia (Glenn Youngkin) killed a bill passed by the state's senate that would have banned law enforcement from obtaining search warrants for women's private menstrual data. Youngkin has been advocating for a 15-week abortion ban in Virginia, and his office has stated that women's menstrual histories should be accessible if needed to investigate crimes. As any woman can tell you, menstruation is not always regular, so using such data as "evidence" to prove a crime is absolutely insane (not to mention a complete invasion of privacy). Governments of free nations do not monitor their citizens' periods. The takeaway: we are on the precipice of the ruin of our democracy. Oh, and DON'T USE PERIOD TRACKERS!!!.

Banning the Pride Flag Means Undermining Inclusion What's one thing that every human being wants? We all want to be loved, valued, accepted, and respected by our family, friends, community, and society. So why does America extend these most basic human rights to some Americans and not others? Despite our government having been formed with the directive to make "no law respecting an establishment of religion," cities and school districts across the country have been busy banning pride flags from public property. Considering there is no logical reason to refuse to include the LGBTQIA community in American society, the only explanation can be that religious bigotry is at play. Since many religious people reject the Bible's teaching on this matter, the resurgence of right-wing religious fanatics seems to be driving city governments to make laws based on religious teachings. This is wholly unconstitutional and immoral. We are all Americans and deserving of the same Constitutional protections. If such things are happening in your city or school district, it's time to attend those city council and school board meetings! Speak up for what is right!

Book of the Month Ejaculate Responsibly A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion by Gabrielle Stanley Blair THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In Ejaculate Responsibly, Gabrielle Blair offers a provocative reframing of the abortion issue in post-Roe America. In a series of 28 brief arguments, Blair deftly makes the case for moving the abortion debate away from controlling and legislating women's bodies and instead directs the focus on men's lack of accountability in preventing unwanted pregnancies. Highly readable, accessible, funny, and unflinching, Blair builds her argument by walking readers through the basics of fertility (men are 50 times more fertile than women), the unfair burden placed on women when it comes to preventing pregnancy (90% of the birth control market is for women), the wrongheaded stigmas around birth control for men (condoms make sex less pleasurable, vasectomies are scary and emasculating), and the counterintuitive reality that men, who are fertile 100% of the time, take little to no responsibility for preventing pregnancy. The result is a compelling and convincing case for placing the responsibility--and burden--of preventing unwanted pregnancies away from women and onto men. -thriftbooks
