Looking Back so we can Move forward |
|
|
Now is the time to look back at what we have accomplished, and look ahead to our next year's challenges. Proving Innocence deals with wrongful convictions from a variety of different angles. We look at its causes and what in our system needs to be changed. We look at cases where we believe individuals have been wrongfully convicted and we look for ways to exonerate them. We look at the immediate and ongoing suffering inflicted upon the individuals, their families, their friends, and even the rest of us as taxpayers. We do what we can to make the world brighter, more hopeful, fair, and just. And we invite YOU to join us in our journey. |

One program with immediate impact to exonerees is our Walking Free Fund. What does an exoneree have after being released? Financially, absolutely nothing! But hopefully, she/he still has the support of family and friends but sometimes it is non-existent or a little of everything in between. Having earned the respect of the Innocence Projects, Conviction Integrity Unites (CIU) and others, these organizations notify us when a wrongfully convicted person is approaching release. This allows us to meet with the new exoneree, giving them something they possess outright. Now they don't have to ask for money to buy toothpaste. This year we raised the amount we award from $800 to $1,000. The exception is that those receiving the Edmundson Walking Fund from the Innocence Network, receive $750. They don't have to apply for these funds and there are no strings attached to how these funds are used; they have had more than enough of their lives controlled by others who have treated them harshly for something they did not do. We are moved to have the privilege of helping at this crucial point in their new life. We are dependent on donations from people like you to carry on this work. |

Bad forensic science, commonly known as "junk science", has long been known as one of the systemic causes of wrongful convictions. This year Ashley Klein began a series of articles tracking the Governor's Task Force on Forensic Science. We encourage you to follow this development so that you can be informed citizens and convey to your representatives in Lansing your support. The cost of such an endeavor pales in comparison to the cost of imprisoning innocent people for decades!!! Ashley Klein's articles on Forensic Science |

A few years ago, Nolan Finley wrote a piece about Temujin Kensu and the seeming inability or refusal of our criminal justice system to rectify a clear miscarriage of justice. One reader was Paula Randolph, who wondered what kind of support Temujin had. So, she contacted him. They immediately hit it off and the end results were wedding bells. |

The National Registry of Exonerations is the unique and irreplaceable record of more than 3,200 exonerated people who lost decades of their lives due to grave miscarriages of justice. The Registry rigorously tracks and records their cases and tells their unique stories. Periodically, they update their analysis of wrongful convictions as it relates to race. Issued in November, 2022, it is 55 pages, but if you only read the 5-page summary, you will be up-to-date on the latest statistics revealing the systemic nature of wrongful convictions, and to extrapolate, the systemic racial problem of the U.S. criminal justice system.
