Grandparents' Morning
My comments are in the context I had nothing to do with the planning or implementation of this joyful occasion. I was simply an enthusiastic bystander and observer arriving from the airport (following an urgent trip to Wellington) with so many grandparents and honorary grandparents just after 9.00 am. I was so impressed with the morning, witnessing the interactions taking place in classrooms with children and their loved ones.
The sheer amount of reading going on was impressive but what was even more impressive was the feeling of togetherness and family and I include the morning tea in the hall that saw epic numbers attending!
Of course, the book fair was a huge hit, with over $13,000 in sales meaning the school gets a portion of that money to purchase books, while also meaning hundreds of new books have gone into homes.
Thank you to everybody who was involved in a wonderful morning. It is something that certainly bears repeating as it brings generations together while, hopefully, giving an insight into what school is like today.
Looking Back, Moving Forward: A Review
The world premier of LBMB, focusing on the history of Titirangi School and the surrounding district, took place on the evening of Sunday 28 August in the Titirangi War Memorial Hall. The movie met with an enthusiastic response from the audience. LBMB was a joint venture between the school and the Ministry of Education's "Creatives in Schools" initiative. Martin and Britta guided our students in documentary interviewing and stop motion animation. The rich history and insights treasured local Titirangites provided about the school and the district, was taken by our children and reimagined as stop-motion animantions.
Students contributed as interviewers, animators, behind the scenes audio and visual techs and poetry creators. While not all visible in the movie, all were essential to it's success. The movie runs for 45 minutes, and, as the title suggests, not only looks at the past, but contemplates the future. Students gave an insight into what they think the future will look like while also reflecting on their experiences during the production period.
The movie screened again on the evening of Thursday 1 September and was attended by Julie Lynch who was instrumental in bringing the production to the school and for suppporting it throughout all stages of production. Thank you so much, Julie. Looking Back, Moving Forward will be freely available for viewing from the 5th September through the links on the school website.
