Birthday celebrations

Hello all you incredible subscribers and welcome to my November newsletter. I celebrated my birthday this week, using the Kylie and The Machine advent calendar for the countdown. It is full of fabulous labels and I have more than enough for the rest of my sewing days, but that won't stop me adding to my collection 😊

I celebrated the week with a trip to Wales, and celebrated the day with an afternoon tea with hubby at The Grove Hotel in Narberth. It was in such a cosy setting in the lounge in front of a log fire, and I was pleased that my Lilou Dress got to put in an appearance too.

Frankie T-Shirt posts

My latest MingMakesMistakes post is out for the Frankie T-Shirt. I was so pleased with how this turned out, given that the original baseball shirt design wasn't so much my style. There were lots of firsts for me in this project: sewing a knit top, raglan sleeves, stretch lace, chainstitch. A game changer for me was learning to use chainstitch for basting as it can be unpicked so quickly and easily. It also made for beautiful topstitching but with added stretch.

Click on the photo for the full Frankie run down detailing my inspiration, fabric used, chainstitch and overlocker techniques, issues I had sewing with stretch lace and how I overcame them, and reducing bulk on the hem to get a great coverstitch result.

I put together a detailed fitting and adjustments post as I changed the original pattern to be a lot more fitted. I include photos of my toiles and explain my pattern adjustments which made a huge improvement to the fit of the sleeves around the shoulder and upper arm.

A number of you have found the fitting posts really useful and so this is something I will continue to share in my future projects. If you have any other comments, do let me know by replying to this email.

Fitting Frankie

Work in progress

I took a sewing project to Wales with me, the Zina Wrap Skirt by Liberty. I chose this as I wanted something that needed minimal fitting, and a wrap skirt fits the bill. I loved the curved front and ruffle, thinking this would be perfect for the cruise we've booked for next summer.

The project was more challenging that I anticipated, partly because I needed to shorten the ruffle by a large amount which couldn't be done in an even manner. I figured out a method that worked really well and fingers crossed I can now take it to the finish line and share this with you. I didn't manage to find any other reviews of this pattern, so hopefully I can help.
