5 STEPS TO START YOUR 2020 PRODUCT STRATEGY

1. Where Are You?

Start with where you are today.  Map your current problems and status across your customer, your business, and your technology. If you've worked with us before, you can do a comprehensive problem map to help you determine where you are today across your product experience.

2. Where Do You Want To Be?

This is your product vision. What do you want the world to look like at the end of 2020? What do you want your customers to say about you? What do you want your business results to be? What do you want your technology stack to look like? Next, map this out across all 3 areas to create a comprehensive vision.

3. How Are You Going To Get There?

This is not a list of projects. This should be themes of work that you hypothesize will get you from where you are today to your destination. Your themes could be around optimizing a core business metric or focusing on a core customer problem.

4. Prioritize, Allocate, & Align

Once you've developed your themes, prioritize them, determine your ideal allocation across them, and align your backlog and prioritization to them. They are your anchors to get you from where you are today to where you want to go.

5. Test and Adapt As You Learn

Strategy is not fixed. It's never done. As you test and learn into your hypotheses and explore your themes, your strategy needs to continually adapt. If you're not continually adapting it, it will quickly become irrelevant.

We are faced with strategic decisions on a daily basis (eg. buy or build, one target customer versus the other, boot-strap or funding). To make these decisions with the teams we lead, we need a framework to structure our thinking and lead us to the best decision for the business and customer. " Please bring a current strategic decision you are working that has at least 2 possible paths you are considering.
