Newsletter March 27, 2022 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

How can you tell someone’s intentions? You can’t. Not unless they back them up with action, making the invisible visible.

If you have been paying attention to international news lately, you will have been flooded with information about the mass protests taking place in Israel right now. Reports have indicated that 200,000 dedicated Israelis flooded the streets in Tel Aviv with 430,000 more gathering in Jerusalem and other cities to stand against the recent actions of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his conservative coalition. This goes along with strikes by port workers, the shutting down of the airport and malls and McDonald's, and the personal fasting by over 30 mayors drawing attention to the issue as a threat to democracy.

For some, these protests are a surprising development—many had no idea that so many Israelis felt this way about the sharp turn to the right the government has taken in the last decade. Indeed, seeing this many people in the streets makes visible the resistance to Netanyahu’s rule, and pressured him into postponing a vote that would further his agenda.

This is why taking a public stand on moral issues is important. It is important to sign petitions, speak at press conferences, and march in protests. As Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, dear rabbi famous for his deep involvement in the Civil Rights Movement said, marching in protests even on Shabbat was a way of “praying with [his] feet.” Making the invisible moral values he held physical, visible.  Literally standing in solidarity with communities is as important as morally standing in solidarity.

Standing in solidarity made a difference in Los Angeles just last week as well in the second largest school district in the United States. Janitors and teachers, along with families in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), stood together in solidarity, waging a massive three day strike which shut down school. In the end, pay was raised (still not a living wage but now more in line with minimum wage), benefits were added, and back pay was agreed to be disbursed. Human dignity is lifted when people stand together.

Friday is International Transgender Day of Visibility, and I have organized and will proudly represent the Keeping It Sacred community at a press rally where interfaith clergy will stand up as, or in solidarity with, the Trans* Community. To make our invisible moral position clear.

Those of you able to get to Pasadena, California, are invited to join our KITS Community contingent. Please contact me for further information.

Those of you in other areas of the country or world are encouraged to think about how you might make your moral position of insistence upon dignity and equity and inclusion known. Perhaps by writing a letter or asking a question at an institution you frequent.

Some may ask a question about the inclusion of trans students in the schools you work at or send your kids to, a question about the membership forms that are required at your gym, or a question about the presence of trans public restrooms. There are so many ways to support of the Trans community.

Wherever you are, as you are able, please consider making your invisible support for any and all communities working for dignity, visible.

This is how we can keep community sacred.

Together, we're #keepingitsacred…

FAITH COMMUNITIES AGAINST ANTI-TRANS LEGISLATION!

Legislation restricting the rights of transgender people and attacks on drag entertainment has become the tip of the spear for a regressive political agenda cloaked in the guise of religious expression and parental rights. Florida stands out as the “hot spot” with its “Don’t Say Gay,” now expanding to “Don’t Be Trans” policies, but over 400 anti-LGBTQ+ bills — most of them impacting trans people, as well as drag performers — are under consideration on the state level. The threat has even reached California, and it’s vital that faith leaders take a stand today!

A coalition of faith communities is coming together to mobilize against this horrible trend. An 11am PT press conference on the International Transgender Day of Visibility, March 31st, will be followed by a preliminary strategy session to plan an active response to the transphobic sentiment taking root in our country and around the world. We urge you to join the groups and faith leaders listed below by responding to this email with your endorsement, and hopefully with your presence on March 31st!

Here in California, Republican Assembly member Bill Essayli of Riverside has introduced a bill that would require school employees to "out" transgender students to their parents. AB1314 runs counter to our state’s anti-discrimination laws that protect the privacy of transgender and gender-nonconforming students, possibly making them vulnerable to dangerous situations with  unsupportive families. Even if the measure has little chance of actually becoming law, experience shows that such proposals serve to terrorize already marginalized people. The time is now to stop this kind of debate over the rights of some of our most vulnerable young people in its tracks.

Please add your name to this list of sponsors and participants, and make your voice heard! Send your endorsements (including name and affiliation) or address any questions to: Rev. Dr. Pat Langlois at 213-258-8254 or revpat@mccuccv.com

And join us for the Faith Communities Standing Together Against Anti-Trans Legislation Press Conference, Friday, March 31, 2023, 11:00 AM PT at All Saints Episcopal Church 132 N. Euclid Avenue in Pasadena, CA 91101.

For those who are not able to be present in person, Rabbi Miller will look to livestream parts of the press conference to her Facebook page. Please check there at 11am PT/2pm ET.

ALSO: Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations.

Currently, we are 100 members strong from 38 different states and 12 countries!

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.

CALIFORNIANS FOR AB 93

The underpinnings of Jewish law insist on fair and equal treatment under the law.

At the literal heart of the Torah, in the middle of the middle chapter of Leviticus, the middle book of Torah, we read:

"You shall not render an unfair decision: do not favor the poor or show deference to the rich; judge your kin fairly.” (Lev. 19:15)

Yet currently, we live in an era of unequal application of the law. Unconscious and conscious bias has led to more consent searches during routine traffic stops of Black individuals (4 times as likely) and Latino individuals (2.4 times as likely) as their white peers.

Police searches based only on a person’s consent are ineffective, costly, and can be lethal. California law enforcement reported that the vast majority of consent searches do not result in the discovery of anything illegal. Well over 90% of consent searches of Black individuals result in no discovery of contraband. Data from Los Angeles found fewer than two percent of all consentsearches resulted in serious contraband, leading LAPD’s Inspector General to conclude that strategies like consent searches are “of limited effectiveness in identifying evidence of illegal firearms or other serious crimes.”

AB 93 will prohibit police officers from asking for consent to search a person or their vehicle without an evidence- based legal justification. This will ensure searches only happen when there is an articulable reason, as opposed to both implicit and explicit bias.

Limiting consent searches will help limit unjustifiable police interactions that lead to more intrusive stops of people of color and often escalate to unsafe encounters for all involved.

Please join KITS members in writing to their assembly members asking them to support AB 93. Find your assembly member HERE.

A VERY PIRKEI AVOT SHAVUOT

And this year, our community will explore the famous work of the Mishnah called Pirkei Avot, commonly translated as “Ethics of the Fathers.” Come study famous Jewish aphorisms by Rabbi Hillel, Rabbi Akiva and even a sage known as Ben Bag Bag! What did they have to say about ethics on their day (over 1800 years ago) and how might that have relevance today?

Thursday, May 25. Study begins at 8pm PT/11pm ET and concludes at 6am PT/9am ET.

BALANCING YOUR INNER LIFE: DUTIES OF THE HEART

Jewish tradition houses some of the most beautiful teachings on character qualities. A thousand years ago, Rabbi Bachya Ibn Pakuda decided to these sacred texts together, organized into various character qualities that he felt would inspire people to live lives of meaning. He called his work “Duties of the Heart,” and it is the work upon which the Mussar Movement (of Exceptional Character Qualities) is based. The book is available for free on Sefaria.org, and so we will take time each week to study teachings and explore how we might make sense of them in our lives today.

Join us for one class, several, or all 10 weeks worth of classes! Please invite your friends to take the series with you, too! 5/25 and 5/26 A VERY PIRKEI AVOT SHAVUOT

For the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, tradition encourages us to stay up all night studying.

Register here: keepingitsacred.com/upcoming
