Jacobite Letters to Lord Pitsligo 1745 – 1746 Alexander Forbes, 4th Lord Pitsligo, became a key figure in the Jacobite attempt to overthrow the British government in 1745. He provides a fascinating view of the inner workings of the army commanded in the name of “Bonnie Prince Charlie” through his correspondence published as “Jacobite Letters to Lord Pitsligo 1745-1746” (Tayler, Alistair and Henrietta. 1930. Aberdeen: Milne & Hutchison.) He had joined his first cousin, John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar, in the Jacobite Uprising of 1715 and fled to Europe after the royalist army of Great Britain quelled that rebellion. He was leading a quiet country life when the Catholic countries of France and Spain signed the 1743 Treaty of Fontainebleau in which King Louis XV of France and his uncle, Philip V of Spain, agreed to co-operate in attempting to restore the Catholic Stuarts to the throne of Great Britain. They planned to use the grandson of deposed James II and VII, Charles Edward Louis John Casimir Sylvester Severino Maria Stuart (popularly known as “Bonnie Prince Charlie”), to destabilize the government of Great Britain and install a client Catholic monarchy. At the age of 67, Pitsligo heeded the request of “Bonnie Prince Charlie” to assist him in his efforts to seize the British throne. Pitsligo became Stuart’s head of horse, a frequent quartermaster, “Governor of Elgin,” the joint commander of the Army of Elgin, and cavalry commander on the field in the final Battle of Culloden. These letters provide a fascinating behind-the-scenes look of the management of the rebellion’s initial successes and ultimate failure. House of Forbes Estates The House of Forbes originated in the dúthchas, or ancestral land, of Forbes in Aberdeenshire over eight centuries ago. The four major branches of Forbes originated with the sons of Sir John “with the Black Lip” of Forbes (circa 1350 – 1406): Alexander of Forbes, the first Lord Forbes; William of Kynaldy, the first Lord Pitsligo; John of Tolquhon; and Alastair Cam of Brux. Over the next few hundred years, these sons of Sir John thrived and their families gained over 160 estates, primarily in Aberdeenshire. Learn more here: https://www.clan-forbes.org/post/estates |

Royal Bloodline of the House of Forbes If you can trace your genealogy back to James, 2nd Lord Forbes, then you can claim a heritage of royal blood stretching back through time through the Kings of Scotland to the Kings of the Picts. Your ancestry includes such royal names as Stewart, Bruce and Mac Alpin – and your royal blood is mostly due to the maternal line. The royal bloodline of the House of Forbes is rooted in both the ancient kings of the Picts who controlled northeastern Scotland and the royal house of Dalriada which dominated the western highlands and islands. These two dynasties of the Pictland and Dalriada were united when Fergusia, daughter of Angus II married Eocha of the Royal House of Dalriada. Their son Alpin gave birth to Kenneth Mac Alpin in about 810 A.D. who united the tribes against the incursions of the Norsemen and was recognized as the first King of the Scots from 843 A.D. until his death in 858. The Forbes: Peerage and Protocol Most people have been addressed by only their last name. However, British protocol dictates that only Malcolm, Lord Forbes, be addressed as “Forbes” or “The Forbes” since he is Chief of the Name and Arms of Forbes, as recognized by the Lord Lyon King of Arms. The proper protocol is to address a clan chief by the full designation, such as Malcolm, Lord Forbes of Forbes, or Forbes of That Ilk. Only if the chief has given you express permission should you ever refer to your chief by his or her first name. In the case of Lord Forbes, the more proper designation would include his title as a hereditary peer in the United Kingdom. The peerage is a system of noble ranks with five levels under the monarch, in descending order: Duke or Duchess; Marquess or Marchioness; Earl or Countess; Viscount or Viscountess; and Baron or Baroness. However, in Scotland, the term "baron" refers to a feudal minor lord who is not a peer. Therefore, the Scottish equivalent is “Lord of Parliament.” Ironically, Lord Forbes does not currently sit in the House of Lords. The landslide victory of the Labour Party in 1997 resulted in the reformation of Parliament with the House of Lords Act 1999. The heritage, honor, and prestige of the title of “Lord of Parliament” has been tarnished in recent years by the practice of selling “lordships” as a fundraising scheme. In a recent court case, judge Alistair Clark, Lord Clark, ruled that “It was neither moral nor legal to offer for sale something that one does not own, or to offer land for sale without explaining the limitations of the effect of that sale, or to represent falsely that the purchase will entitle the buyer to style himself or herself as a Lord or Lady.” Therefore, calling yourself a “Lord” or "Lady” is a complete breach of protocol and is insulting to all members of the peerage, including our chief Malcolm, Lord Forbes. Flowers of the Forest “Flowers of the Forest” is a Scottish folk song commemorating the defeat of the Scottish army of James IV at the Battle of Flodden in September 1513.
