Rollins College Campus Walking Tour Recap

The past Saturday, February 19, 2022, OFA hosted our FIRST walking tour of 2022 at Rollins College in Winter Park. Our tour guide was Bruce Stephenson, Rollins faculty and author of “John Nolen, Landscape Architect and City Planner”. Bruce generously contributed the essay on Rollins College in our Architectural Guide to Central Florida.

We saw a number of the historic buildings and learned the story behind the 1927 plan that created the vision we see embodied in the campus today. Repeatedly voted the most beautiful campus in the United States, its loggias and covered walkways link Neo-Renaissance and Mediterranean Revival buildings set on quadrangles and small courtyards to capture breezes.

Thank you to Dr. Bruce Stephenson his extensive knowledge and time!

Visit our OFApedia page on Rollins College for more reading about the campus plan and architecture.

The First Orlando Artist Colony

The amazing Mayan Revival structures originally opened as the Research Studio in Maitland are an architectural treasure in the Central Florida. A series of artist studio’s for guest artists, arranged around a courtyard with a main gallery building and supporting structures, it opened in 1937. J. Andre Smith was trained and practiced as an architect, but was later more widely known for his published etchings of Europe during the first World War.

Currently showing a collection of highwaymen paintings from the Orange County History Center, the AHM-M show provides a view into the lives of these African American painters. The Recollections of Doretha Hair Truesdell: Alfred Hair and the Florida Highwaymen runs through May 8, 2022 at the Maitland Art Center galleries, open 11-4 Thursday through Sunday.
