DONE WITH SCHOOL, NOW TIME FOR THE POOL!

Summer is here, and I often get this question from new ostomates, “May I go swimming with my pouch?” The answer is unequivocally, YES! Swim, kayak, paddle. You name the water sport, you CAN do it. Having an ostomy shouldn’t limit your water exposure. Most, if not all ostomy systems are water safe. (However, be sure to read the manufacturer’s product information to ensure your system is water safe and if not, I can help make recommendations to support your yearning to dive in).

A couple of pro tips:

1. Ensure you have had your current pouching system on for more than 12 hours.

2. Empty the pouch and confirm your system is sealed prior to jumping in.

3. If your pouch has a filter, you might consider a filter cover sticker

to ensure the filter isn’t compromised.

4. Carry extra supplies in case you want to change out your entire system out.

--Famous Ostomate Alert--

Napoleon Bonaparte did not let his ostomy clip his wings, he went on to become a world leader and French military icon. Bonaparte was emperor of France from 1804 to 1815, and is often pictured with his right hand in his shirt, a method he is rumored to have developed to conceal his goat bladder ostomy bag.

You are not alone in this Ostomy journey, this community is here to support and love you. So what are you waiting for? Spread those wings and take off...
