Walking and running club has been going so great! Teammates that started with walking, have challenged themselves and are now running! We have increased our team numbers as well as our volunteer numbers! If you are looking to get back into walking and running and need some friends to motivate you, come on out to Gahagan Park every Monday from 4-5pm and move your bodies with us! Our last day of walking/running club is May 22nd. |

Beyond BASIC had a gardening day in the month of April! We spent a morning planting and filling our garden with new herbs. We have added many new plants to our garden this year. Some of these new plants include okra, squash, zucchini, and onions. Thank you to Chris Burtt from Clemson University Lowcountry Resiliency Collaborative, Katie's Krops for donating the plants, and Holly Chesley Annibale for donating soil. We are excited to see our plants grow! |
We are so grateful for our community partners that allow our team to come volunteer on Wednesdays! We have continued working with the Summerville YMCA, Summerville Dream, The Mayeux Horse Barn and Benny Mazzetto's. This month at Benny Mazzetto's our team was awarded "Employers of the Moment!" |

Syde Kontrol Martial Arts |
Over the past month, 5 of our teammates have started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Syde Kontrol Martial Arts. This experience has taught our teammates self-defense, self-control, emotional regulation and has exposed our teammates to a new, fun and exciting way to exercise! Our teammates have been practicing transitions such as forward and backward rolls, hip escapes, forward hip escapes and sit-up escapes. We have also been practicing positions such as open and closed guard. We are so grateful for our partnership with Syde Kontrol! |
We have started another great volunteer opportunity with Middleton Place! We have helped water plants, clean out pots, and help in the garden market. |
BB was thrilled to take some teammates to Advocacy Day in Columbia. We loved being able to make posters and hold them high for all to see! We think it is very important to teach our Teammates that everyone is equal, their disability doesn't define them, and the importance of fighting for their rights. |

Huge shoutout to Aidan as we celebrated his Golden Goal party in April! He has been working very hard to earn leadership points in order to celebrate with a golden goal party. Once teammates have earned a certain amount of golden goals, we get to celebrate their hard work. Each teammate gets to decide what they want to do to celebrate this accomplishment. Aidan decided to have an outing to the Summerville Airport. What a cool experience this was!!! We got to check out airplanes, tour the airplane hangars, and even sit in the front of the plane like a co-pilot. A huge thanks to Steve and Patty Mayeux, along with their team, for allowing Aidan to celebrate his golden goal at the airport. Below are some of the pictures from our team at the Summerville Airport! Stay tuned to see who earns their golden goal next month. |

This month in self-care we have been learning about first-aid including how to take care of minor cuts, infections, when to ask for help and emergencies. Teammates have been working on how to ask for help in diverse ways including using their voice and in ASL. Teammates have also been working on when things are okay vs when there is an emergency. Please encourage your teammates to continue asking for help at home. |

Fine Motor groups have been working hard this month to strengthen our muscles in our hands to improve independent daily living tasks. Some of the tasks that we have been working on are opening/closing items, sorting, zipping, and hole punching. Once teammates become independent in these tasks, they earn a fine motor badge. Teammates have the opportunity to earn three different badges this year. Congratulations on Christian, Melissa, Covington, Anthony, and Lindsay for eating their first fine motor badge this month. They are independent in all four of the tasks listed above. Great work, Christian, Melissa, Covington, Anthony, and Lindsay!!!! |

On April 27th, we held our second Beyond Connection Event of the 2023 Year. This event was held at Benny Mazzetto's in Summerville. This month caregivers got the opportunity to hear from guest speaker, Donald Bailey. Donald shared his story about being a parent to a son with an intellectual disability. What a fun night it was! Caregivers got the opportunity to mix, mingle, and eat pizza. Thank you to Benny's for hosting this event and to Donald for sharing his awesome story. If you missed out, we look forward to seeing you at our next event, May 31st.

"My experience volunteering has been amazing! There is no other place where you can go and be surrounded by the most positive, kind hearted people. Volunteering at the social nights are one of my favorite ways to spend Wednesday evenings." -Sierra Johnston, Summerville, S.C. |
