Feature ArticleWhy is Generalization Important? |
As we welcome in the new year, let’s not forget about all the amazing skills your client has learned in the year of 2022! One way you can make sure your client does not forget their skills is through generalization. Generalization is a very important concept in the field of ABA. Generalization is defined as a learner emitting a target behavior in a setting or stimulus situation that differs from the instructional setting (Cooper et al., 2020). |
Or in other words, generalization is the ability for an individual to perform a skill under different conditions. Generalization is incorporated in all programming to ensure the client can successfully apply the skills learned from a clinical setting to the real world. This concept looks different with every client. For example, a client may be learning how to answer different WH questions with an end goal of being able to have a conversation with anyone. By running programs with different people, settings and questions promote generalization. Generalization is important because it allows your client to adapt and thrive outside of the instructional setting. Imagine learning how to cook in a pretend kitchen and not any other way? You would not be able to effectively cook in an actual kitchen. This is why generalization is incorporated as a goal for all client programming. Tips for Generalization: Switch up your session environment and perform programs in different settings. Have your client work on skills with someone new. Change the way you ask questions. Switch up the materials used.

Chloe Branch, BCBA Chloe is from New Jersey and has been a BCBA for about a year now. She said her favorite thing about Rainbow ABA is how collaborative the whole team is. She stated, "Everyone is more than willing to help when needed and the support received is nothing I've ever experienced before." Her advice to BCBA candidates is to follow the advice she received from her previous supervisor. It is a simple phrase: 'be a learn it all.' This field is constantly growing and advancing, so there's always something to learn. A fun fact about Chloe is she loves animals. If she didn't purse ABA, she would have been a veterinarian. In her spare time Chloe loves to cook new recipes she finds on Pinterest. |
