There’s a little character in the rabbinic imagination known as the yetzer ha-ra (in English: the evil inclination). We discussed it and it’s opposite, the yetzer ha-tov (the inclination for goodness) yesterday in our Balancing Your Inner Life class. You see, the rabbis use these concepts to describe human nature and those urges all humans have- to be naughty or to be good.

A thousand years ago, Rabbi Bachya Ibn Pakuda focused on the evil inclination and personified it, describing it as lying low in wait, garbing itself in friendship, ready to assault your innermost being with doubts about yourself and others, distorting the truth, and confounding you.  He warned that each minor victory it gains is a stepping stone to larger battles to be won in the future until it destroys you.

For example, a person who lets negative self talk infiltrate their mind and heart, they may come to negative gossip about the people around them, and from there act in ways that disadvantage them.  Eventually, the person may cause real harm to  them. And all of this because the person let the yetzer ha-ra gain a little foothold by allowing the negativity of self doubt creep in.

The evil inclination starts with a seemingly light transgression that can bring those around us and eventually ourselves, to utter destruction. It is hard to underestimate the danger of the yetzer ha-ra, but Pakuda insists,

“Do not be daunted by it, though its armies be mighty; do not be afraid of it, though it supporters be money. For his chief intent is to make truth out of falsehood; its main purpose is to uphold untruth. How soon it comes its fall, how swiftly is ruined, if you will but realize it’s weakness.” (Feldheim translation, p. 487)

And therefore, we should celebrate every win, no matter how small, against the yetzer ha-ra. Every time a person resists the temptation of baser instincts, should be a time to honor and rejoice in. Like how in many recovery groups, there is an acknowledgement that abstinence happens one day at a time, and each day is a victory.

Each time we deny the yetzer ha-ra space in our lives, we have saved ourselves from our own downfall. In fact, 1800 years ago the rabbis asked, in the Mishnah, who is strong? And they answered: the one who can overcome their yetzer ha-ra.

Take today and notice all of the enticements of the yetzer ha-ra/ evil inclination that you are overcoming.  Your victories should be celebrated. You’re keeping it sacred!

And, feel encouraged to join our next class, this coming Sunday, on the topic of humility. Register HERE.

Rabbi Heather Miller,

Founder, Keeping It Sacred

BALANCING YOUR INNER LIFE

A thousand years ago, Rabbi Bachya Ibn Pakuda decided to pull sacred texts about exceptional character qualities together. He felt this would be a useful tool to inspire people to live lives of meaning. He called his work Duties of the Heart, and it is the work upon which the Mussar Movement is based. The book is available for free on Sefaria.org, and we will take time each week to study teachings and explore how we might make sense of them in our lives today.

Join us for one class, several, or all 9 weeks worth of classes! Please invite your friends to take the series with you, too!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.
