Issue #3

Hello :

ON OCTOBER 18, 2021, SCIENCE LOST IN CALGARY…

An editorial by Paul Connett, Ph.D., a co-author of The Case Against Fluoride (Chelsea Green, 2010).

SCIENCE LOSES WHEN PROFESSIONALS FALL ASLEEP

To be precise, the very best scientific research conducted to date on fluoride’s toxicity, lost when citizens voted to return fluoride to Calgary’s water supply.

That “losing” science clearly demonstrates that fluoride poses a huge risk to the developing brain both at the fetal stage (when fluoride can enter the placenta) and during early infancy (when the blood brain barrier is not fully developed). These dramatic results were revealed in high-quality studies funded by the US government and published in major journals since 2017. Anyone with a moderate scientific training can easily confirm what I have written here, by tracking down the key studies (Bashash 2017, Green 2019 and Till 2020), but unfortunately the average voter in Calgary couldn’t do that. They needed help and they didn’t get that help from those who could have given it.

How many Calgarians would have voted for this measure, if they had been informed by someone they trusted that swallowing fluoride in water at the levels proposed for Calgary could lower their children’s mental ability?

Citizens didn’t get any help from the Calgary Herald, which missed every opportunity to give any (serious) coverage to these studies – even though two were conducted in Canada and the third led by Canadian researchers. Instead, the Calgary Herald gave coverage to the far less critical issue of tooth decay, which can be tackled by far simpler means than forcing everyone to ingest fluoride as most of the rest of Canada and the world has shown.

But before we blame the press, those who really need to hold their heads in shame are the Albertan professional organizations (medical doctors and dentists) and health authorities, who were TOLD to vote "Yes" for fluoridation by their respective organizations.  So, without informing themselves, they blindly toed the party line and influenced the votes of Calgarians who trusted them.

For decades these bodies have put the need to defend an outdated practice above the need to ensure that policies designed to protect the public health are informed by the very best science. Instead, when it came to water fluoridation, they have constantly and mindlessly repeated the refrain that it is “safe and effective” – regardless of any new science that came their way. In short, they have allowed themselves to be captured by propagandists and most recently become easy tools of the so-called ethicist Juliet Guichon who appears to know little about neuroscience.

The lesson in all this is a simple, but frightening one. In bureaucracies, either professional or governmental, when policy becomes king, science becomes a slave.

Escaping this treadmill of subservience to “policy” is not going to be easy but it can be done. It will require individual professionals whether they are in government service or in their own practices, if capable, to take the time to actually read the literature for themselves when it comes to scientific subjects which become pertinent to a social decision like this one. Having done so, they should advise their fellow citizens what the science says. In this case too few professionals did this. As a result, they allowed their fellow citizens to be misled and vote for something that will harm their – and others' – children. And possibly, if other communities follow Calgary’s bad example, the rest of Canada.

HOW SAFE WATER CALGARY WAS SABOTAGED

The Media – The week prior to the plebiscite, Postmedia, the media company operating the Calgary Herald and Sun allowed Safe Water Calgary to place half-page ads opposing water fluoridation on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The ads were also scheduled to run Saturday in the Herald and Sunday in the Sun.

Safe Water Calgary had already been guaranteed the ads would be run by Postmedia and had already paid for them in full.

On Friday, Safe Water Calgary was asked by Postmedia to either reduce their ad to merely saying people should vote "No" and reference their website, or provide a citation or direct URL for numerous statements in the ad. Safe Water Calgary responded within an hour by providing both citations and URL’s for all the statements Postmedia had highlighted. Safe Water Calgary also pointed out that these references were freely available to the public on its website at www.safewatercalgary.com.

Less than two hours later, Dean Jager, Director of Media Sales, e-mailed Safe Water Calgary saying “I am writing to inform you that we cannot accept your advertisement at this time.”  Jager has not responded to multiple requests from Safe Water Calgary for an explanation why they are now banning the ads.

“This is an outrage,” Dr. Robert Dickson, MD, Safe Water Calgary director, asserted. “This is censorship – pure and simple. Are we still in Canada? Do we still have freedom of speech? Postmedia is favouring one side in this debate, restricting the rights of the other side to be heard – an egregious violation of journalism ethics.”

Dental Organization – One very courageous dentist stepped into the spotlight and offered his photo and comments about the dangers of fluroidated water.  This was included in a very professional flyer that was distributed through the mail.  However, when the dental organization got wind of this, they threatened his licence, so the posting of this flyer on the Safe Water Calgary homepage, unfortunately has his contribution blocked out.

Lawn Signs – To further disseminate the NO TO CHEMICALS message, a lot of time, energy and money were spent on distributing several editions of lawn and boulevard signs around the city. In various wards, tracking showed that between 20-55% of these were laid down, destroyed or stolen. This shows the extent to which the fluoride promoters and lobbyists will go to further their message.

Biased Interviews – The most pronounced bias is that Dr. Bob kept emphasizing the neurotoxic risks to babies in his interviews, but none of his statements appeared in print or on TV or radio, to the best of our knowledge.

FLUORIDE FACT

Fluoride is the only chemical added to water for the purpose of medical treatment (cavity prevention)

HOW CAN YOU HELP TODAY?

Take a few minutes to fully inform yourself about your own local situation.  Are you fluoridated?   And if so, with what fluoridation chemical.  Here's how can find out:

  1. Check your city’s website for a copy of the Drinking Water System Annual Report.  (If you are unable to find the information online try contacting your city’s water department.)

  2. Search on "chemicals" and a chart such as the following will be found.  Note that "hydrofluosilicic acid" is fluoride—added to "treat humans"— the other chemicals are to treat the water.

Sincerely,

Dr. James Winter, PhD
