The mission of MASC is to foster a statewide environment for all secondary school students to express and exchange opinions and ideas, develop leadership skills, and promote student representation and involvement in all groups and organizations impacting the lives of students. |

MASC membership for the 2022-2023 school is closing on Wednesday, January 25th. This is the same date as the closing for online registration for the Legislative Session. Schools planning on attending Legislative Session or Convention need to be a MASC member school. |

REGISTRATION FOR THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION IS NOW OPEN !! Registration closes at 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2023. Only MASC Member Schools may register and only a school advisor can register a school delegation! |

The second major MASC conference of the school year is the Legislative Session. During this event, students will participate in leadership workshops, take stances on youth-related bills in the Maryland General Assembly, and participate in selecting the final two candidates for the student member of the State Board of Education! MASC AwardsDeadline: 5:00 p.m. Saturday, February 11, 2023 It's never too early to start the paperwork to nominate an advisor, principal, or student for a MASC award or recognition! Please note that the middle and high school principal and advisor of the year awards must go through the regional organization (except for counties with no regional organization). Note: The Felix Simon Award for Leadership and Service is completed by the school and goes directly to MASC. This is a recognition award for school student councils. MASC awards and recognitions are open to MASC MEMBER SCHOOLS.

Virtual "Meet the SMOB Candidates" Town HallFebruary 7, 2023Registration Jan 18-Feb 5, 2023 MASC member schools attending the Legislative Session have an opportunity to meet the student member on the state Board of Education (SMOB) before the conference. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and be an educated voter! The final candidates will have information posted on the MASC home page after the January 14th interviews. January Service Spotlight: New Year of Service MASC is encouraging school and regional student councils to make a New Year’s Resolution of service this year. The New Year is a great time to form new habits and set goals. Set goals for how you want to give back this entire year through volunteering and donating. If your school or regional SGA has completed an exciting community service project, MASC wants to share your work to help students around the state follow your lead! MASC has a Google form to submit a description and photos of your project at any time throughout the year. Your SGA can also support service work initiated by other student groups and organizations, then complete the form to share the story of this collaboration with MASC! Electronics Recycling In keeping with our green goals, MASC is proud to continue our environmentally friendly and responsible fundraiser designed to help alleviate the fast-growing environmental problem of e-waste. But we need your help! Simply dust off your old electronics, place them in a box, print the FREE pre-paid shipping label, and take it to the nearest FedEx to ship. 100% of the proceeds from the recycling of these items will go towards funding MASC, so we can continue to have our amazing events and conferences. This is an ongoing fundraiser and environmental project, so start your collection today! | | |

Committees are an excellent way for students in Maryland to get involved in issues for which they are passionate or skilled and to learn more about MASC. MASC still has several committee applications that are open. Some are only looking for representation from specifically under-represented counties and Baltimore City. Maryland Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) Grant-Project Program Mandatory Zoom Information Session January 5th (7:00 pm) or January 7th (2:00 pm) MYAC is sponsoring a state-sponsored grant-project program. We will be giving out five $1000 grants to youth-led organizations (including ALL middle and high school SGAs in Maryland) to initiate a project in their community. Projects could range in topics from the environment to education to social justice. MYAC would love to see some SGAs apply for the grant! There is a mandatory information session on Zoom that will detail the application process. | | |

NA4SA Advisor AcademyRegistration for the Level I Academy – is Now OPEN!(National Association for Student Activities) Participants in Level I (Foundations) will go through six online modules over approximately three months. Much of the work is asynchronous, however, there are six online meetings for the cohort from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on January 30, February 13, February 27, March 20, April 3, and April 17. Further questions can be directed to NA4SA Education and Engagement Coordinator Dr. Felix Yerace at fyerace@na4sa.org. |

Karen Crawford, MASC Assistant Executive Director, participated in the pilot program for the Level I Foundations. She found the reading easy and the resources very helpful. The discussions with the cohort were the highlight! Karen highly recommends this program for activity advisors of all ages! |
