Battle of Solway Moss The Battle of Solway Moss on November 24, 1542, led to the 1543 Treaty of Greenwich which promised that King Henry VIII’s son, the future Edward VI, would marry Mary, Queen of Scots. This was opposed by William, then the Master of Forbes and later 7th Lord Forbes. Here's a bit of background. In 1534, English King Henry VIII pushed the Act of Supremacy through the Parliament. This Act broke removed England from the authority of the Catholic Pope and proclaimed him the Supreme Head of the Church of England. He urged his nephew James V, King of the Scots, to break with the Catholic Church and recognize his authority. King James declined and refused to meet with Henry. On November 24, 1542, Sir Thomas Wharton, the Deputy Warden of the English West March, led about 3,200 men north to Solway Moss, near the village of Arthuret on the River Esk. Convinced that a large English army was advancing, the Scots panicked and rapidly retreated. Queen Mary’s regent James Hamilton, Earl of Arran, signed the Treaty of Greenwich on July 1, 1543. This treaty agreed to a marriage proposal between King Henry VIII’s son, the future Edward VI, and Queen Mary of Scotland. In reaction, William, then the Master of Forbes and later 7th Lord Forbes, joined with other Scottish lords in signing the “Secret Bond” on July 24, 1543, in which they agreed to resist alliance with England by marriage. Forbes of Inverernan John “Black Jock” Forbes of Inverernan played an integral part in the Jacobite rebellion of 1715 and founded a cadet branch of the House of Forbes that lasted for six generations. John was born in 1664 to William Forbes, 2nd of Skellater, and was nicknamed “Black Jock” due to his dark complexion. By 1701, Black Jock had been appointed Baillie of Kildrummy, to John Erskine, Earl of Mar, (1675 – May 1732). After the Union of Scotland and England in 1707, Mar was appointed as the British Secretary of State. However, when Queen Anne died in 1714 and King George of the House of Hanover assumed the throne, he was thrown out of favor. In retaliation, Mar organized a rebellion against the British government in the name of James Francis Edward Stuart, son of the deposed James II and VII. He immediately turned to his baillie Black Jock Forbes of Inverernan to raise troop for the cause. Black Jock was wounded and captured at Battle of Sheriffmuir on November 13, 1715. He was tried for treason and condemned but died by his own hand in prison. Unlike many Jacobite supporters, his family was able to hold onto the estates and his son Alexander became the 2nd laird of Inverernan. In 1897, George, the 8th and last Laird of Inverernan, died in 1915 and the Inverernan estate was sold in 1925. (Photo: Lonach Highlanders at Inverernan House in 1900.) Please respond by clicking on the SurveyMonkey link and voting for the 2023 Officers that comprise the Board of Directors: the President who serves as the Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President of Operations who serves as the Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President for Conveners who manages the outreach and marketing at all the highland games and Scottish festivals, and the new position of Vice President for Membership who processes new and renewing members and maintains member relations. The President can appoint any other officer and directors as needed and as interest allows. You will also be asked for your advice on topics and pricing options for the upcoming 2023 Clan Forbes Gathering planned in the Boston suburbs in October. If you did not receive a ballot, please check the last Active Membership certificate you received which will indicate the last time you paid your dues.
