Hello! Does waiting two hours outside for a COVID test on an empty stomach count as atonement? Thursday was Yom Kippur, the day Jews fast to atone for their sins. I was exposed to COVID a few days earlier, so I spent the amount of time I'd normally spend in temple tracking down a mobile testing spot with my dad in ... not the nicest part of Philly ..., waiting on line, and getting tested. It felt like atonement. Below, see my journey to atonement and negative test results, my reaction to the Met Gala, and updates about a happier holiday, Chanukah! Enjoy! Atonementont on the COVID testing line |
Long story short, I spent time with a friend who got a breakthrough case of COVID. It seems like she got it from a friend who was not vaccinated. My first reaction was to call the NYC COVID hotline — since I had COVID in November, I know the number well! They said I didn't have to get tested unless I had actual symptoms, but I went anyway on Yom Kippur after the obligatory 4 days past the exposure. I was in Philly with my dad, and it was not easy to find a testing site. They were limited or full or I needed a referral or an appointment or actual symptoms. I finally found a mobile testing site way in North Philly on the side of the road.
Testing sites in NYC have been filling up, too. A friend of mine said urgent care was full for the day by 7:20 am. I didn't feel like drawing a new doodle about this testing nonsense, so I reused one from last year which sadly is still relevant. |

Anyway, as you'll see in photos below, tracking down a test and waiting for it was unpleasant, but I felt it counted toward my temple obligations. I had lots of time to reflect and feel bad. And I'm negative, which shows how effective vaccines are, and hopefully ensures I've been inscribed into the book of life for year 5782. |

This is what paying for sins looks like while waiting for a COVID test |

Post-atonement and sinning again— this is me at Zoom services after breaking my fast a half hour early. Temple from home is awesome! I was eating and singing along off key and nobody cared ... except my dad. |

Shoutout to my sister Julia. That is her dress and I will reluctantly give it back. |

Thoughts on the Met Gala fashion |
The annual Met Gala has been on hiatus since 2019. It came back on Sunday night —I thought the theme and the fashion were lame! See my doodle and video reaction below, and you can read more about what I thought here. |

Progress on my Chanukah book |
I announced last week I'm working on a Chanukah book. When I told my grandma that I'm working on this project we immediately had an argument over whether Esther was part of Chanukah or Purim (answer is Purim). This is exactly why I need to do the book! Couldn't we all use a reminder, or a primer on the story? Book idea — a doodle retelling of Chanukah with a guide for each of the eight days with recipes, songs, crafts, and fun facts. I am struggling with a title, here are my ideas so far: - Chanukah or Hanukkah? An 8-day guide to the festival of lights
- Get Lit: A Chanukah story and guide to the festival of lights
- Light it Right: A guide to getting the festival of light right
Event ideas — 8 acts, 1 night - a variety show that brings the guide in the book to life! |

Shopping early for the holiday |
This week, instead of starting the book, I bought earrings. I got excited! I wanted to get Ariel Tidhar holiday earrings last year for my Passover event, but I was too late. So I ordered some because they were on sale (I think they still are!). Plus, she mailed them with an awesome digital illustration of herself. so I had to share! |
But then she posted these! Do I buy them when they become available?! |
Thanks for reading, supporting the book, and helping with shopping decisions?! See you next week! |
