the weekly Round-Up

Dear Round-Up Readers,

As Adweak tweeted, "Let's Circle Back After The Holidays" Season Has Officially Begun! Speaking of Twitter, the meltdown continues with lots of speculation on WTAF Elon is doing. Personally, I'm more curious about the implosion of FTX, which seems to have simply been a giant Ponzi scheme!?!!  Listen to HardFork from the NYT, which was super informative on both topics and also made me laugh. Ever wonder why so much money gets showered upon these guys?  Research says it is thanks to "pattern matching," the practice of VCs giving money to start-ups whose founders look like other successful founders. Cringeworthy, especially given that less than two percent––yes, you read that correctly––less than 2% of VC funding goes to women and even less to minorities.

Meanwhile, COP27 came and went with few women in attendance and definitely less attention than last year. While we work on an article, here is a useful recap from Green Matters.

Also, some guy from Florida made an announcement, and getting Taylor Swift tickets was a fiasco…it’s been that kind of week! Now, on to other news…

Business, Women, and Random Trends:

  • Equal Parental Leave at JP Morgan Wall Street giant JPMorgan Chase will be giving 16 weeks of leave to all new parents in the US — regardless of whether the employees are the primary caregivers. This came as the result of a 2019 lawsuit but nonetheless is a positive move towards couples being able to share caregiving.

  • Why are way more women suddenly working in construction? Read the data and policies behind a cultural shift that has allowed more women to work in the male-dominated industry. Great lessons can be learned about how to achieve more gender balance!

  • Swipe and buy: Social media is now a destination for holiday shopping 60 percent of Gen Z (born from 1997 to 2012) and 56 percent of millennials (1981 to 1996) will do at least some holiday shopping on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and similar apps, according to the consulting firm Deloitte. Read more in WaPo.

  • Leg Booty? Panoramic? Seggs? How TikTok Is Changing Language. Not just for shopping, social media is also creating a new vocabulary — new words have emerged on the social video platform, as creators try to get around algorithms and strict content moderation. They call it algospeak. I definitely was not familiar with many of the words in this article from the New York Times, maybe you are fluent in "algospeak"?

  • The Good, the Bad, and the Just Plain Weird of How Coffee Affects Your Psychology Science confirms it: your morning coffee boosts alertness. But it has lesser-known (and lesser welcome) effects, too. Click if you are a coffee lover.

  • Want to feel happier? Try snacking on joy. Learning to find the joy in mundane experiences is a way to cultivate a more meaningful life. “It’s not these big things that we sort of create in our heads, but these smaller day-to-day experiences that bring us meaning,” says Joshua Hicks, psychologist at Texas A&M University’s Existential Psychology Collaboratory. Read tips on how to enjoy small joys!

  • Harvard Study Reveals the 1 Thing That Makes Humans Happy. Science says the most important thing is...personal connection. "It creates mental and emotional stimulation," says Dr. Robert Waldinger, "and those things are automatic mood boosters, while isolation is a mood buster." Read more about how technology is getting in the way of human connection.

Travel & Hospitality news:

  •  Hilton's Annual Trend Report is out for 2023! I am a fan of this report, which breaks down consumer trends based on Hilton's research. Key themes: experience-led travel, travel as part of wellness, travelers looking for more personalized service, and the use of technology to help without losing the human touch. Read more from Hilton.

  • Four Seasons Won’t Let Tech Replace the Human Exchange Expected of Luxury Very interesting interview in Skift with Marc Speichert, executive vice president and chief commercial officer of Four Seasons about how the luxury brand is integrating technology without losing the human touch (see above from Hilton!)

  • Weaponization of Travel: Navigating Cultural Obstacle Courses Smart Meetings takes a look at the relatively new practice of using event boycotts as a weapon to make a cultural statement. This has grown to include bans based on laws about gun control, women’s reproductive rights, and the ability to “say gay," and how meeting planners are navigating these new challenges.

  • Did you know you can buy trip insurance based on the weather? I learned about it on Susan Barry's Top Floor podcast interview with Peter Van Dorn, Business Development at Sensible Weather. Seems like a really cool business and something that hotels can easily offer to guests before their trip, and share in the revenue.
