Women of the World

“In a time of destruction, create something: a poem, a parade, a community, a school, a vow, a moral principle; one peaceful moment."

Maxine Hong Kingston

June 6, 2022

May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Women of the World stands with other Americans in recognizing the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.

May's Activities

Our Mother's Day event was a success! We loved celebrating all our fabulous and hardworking mothers from our clientele. We echo the words of our speaker at the event Nikki Walker who said to our women: "as mothers raising children in a foreign land, mothers surrounded by the unknown who must still make a warm and comfortable space for her children, mothers who have made the ultimate sacrifice of leaving their homes to find a better life for their children…for you, courage is your superpower."

We also had the privilege of honoring one client as Women of the World's Mother of the year. Fahmo has worked hard to create a better life for her daughter here in Salt Lake City. She is diligent with her job and comes in multiple times a week to study for her US citizenship test and practice her English. She is a great example of the many mothers at WoW who persevere to support themselves and their families. We applaud and admire their courage!

Utah-based women's organization honors international moms in Mother's Day celebration

Petals of red, pink and purple bloomed in vases set up across tables in the Salt Lake County Building Atrium on Saturday. Women and children from nations around the globe sat at those tables, pulling the vases close to smell the vibrant blossoms. One mother leaned her vase over to her daughter, so she could smell them as well, chiding her not to move them from the vase with a smile.

Women of the World was honored to receive a grant award from Sundt Construction this month. Thank you to all those at Sundt for supporting us and our mission and working to make a difference in our community.

We also were honored to receive an award from the Salt Lake County Health Department for our work during the COVID-19 pandemic in helping to teach health literacy, educating marginalized communities on safe health practices, and our daily customized service in supporting their needs for jobs and healthcare.

Sundt Foundation Donates to Women of the World

SALT LAKE CITY (June 1, 2022) - The Sundt Foundation awarded $5,000 to Women of the World during its current giving round. The organization provides support in numerous ways to meet the needs of women in the Salt Lake City area.

One Million Dollars in Economic Empowerment

This month, our Senior Case Manager Luz reached one million dollars in Economic Empowerment. Throughout her two years working at WoW, she has helped our clients save money and earn higher incomes through new jobs. We are so proud of her dedication in supporting these women and their dreams. Our staff works tirelessly to make WoW's mission possible and we are sad to lose both Luz and Zach as they move on from Women of the World. If you haven't had the chance to come and say goodbye or sign a thank you card, come swing by our office!

Knitting Workshop

We also hosted another successful knitting and crocheting workshop for our clients. We loved seeing the creativity of our ladies and fostering a space where they can come, socialize, and learn/master a new skill. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who helped teach the class-- our ladies so appreciated it!

We are always looking to encourage community involvement! If you have a skill or idea for a workshop, please get in touch with our case manager, Ghinwa by emailing her: ghinwa@womenofworld.org.

Salt Lake Communication Council Appreciation Dinner

Women of the World was also honored along with four other community organizations at the Joseph Smith Memorial building on May 11th. We are grateful to the Salt Lake Communication Council and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for putting on the event and honoring the work that we do to help support and strengthen the community of Salt Lake. Community development is a vital part of WoW and we hope to continue to spread the word about our mission and how Utah natives can participate and support our mighty cause!
