Starting 2019 with LOVE, quality education and health

Dear friends and colleagues,

The year 2018 was a banner year for REACH Shirati. There were many accomplishments and a few highlights are:

  • Our second graduating class at Tina's school scored in the top 2% of all schools taking the national exams in Tanzania!
  • Over 30 volunteers from the United States and Europe joined us in Shirati to:

    • Teach at Tina’s School

    • Expand our computer classroom

    • Facilitate Healthcare screenings for Tina's students

    • Assess the school water quality and improve community access to clean water

    • Evaluate and expand the Shirati Hospital Food Program

Together we raised $114,000 in 2018!! BUT IN 2019 WE MUST DO EVEN BETTER!

Love has to be shown by deeds not words...

Swahili proverb

A quality education is the path to independence and success.

We at REACH Shirati care deeply about creating opportunities and enhancing the independence of the community we serve. We want our projects to survive and thrive without our support!

Over the last two years, we have increased the amount of school fees that we collect from our students' families who can afford it. As a result, today, one-fourth of our operating expenses are paid for by the community! But like independent schools here in the United States, school fees do not cover all of our expenses.

In addition, the Tanzanian government has put a cap on school fees and to maintain our status as a community service, we are caught in a bind – if we raise our fees so that Tina’s Pre and Primary School is more self-sufficient, the government will reclassify our school as a business which may be challenging!

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT MORE THAN EVER

By becoming a sustaining donor you help us provide life-changing opportunities for children, maintain our academic standards, continue to pay our faculty and staff a fair market wage, and offer scholarships to the most vulnerable children in the Shirati and Nyamagongo community.

The pictures in this newsletter show Tina's students being served and eating their daily Ugi lunch which is Cassava Porridge. With your help we can continue providing Ugi for our students, for some of whom this is the only meal of the day.
