Aurora City Council Newsletter

Welcome to my periodic newsletter where I'll keep you up-to-date with what's going on with Aurora City Council - what we've voted on, what we've studied and more.

I'd like to start by recognizing the victims of the Club Q shooting in Colorado Springs this past weekend. My heart is broken for the families whose lives have been forever altered. Our society shouldn’t tolerate a hate-driven attack on the LGBTQ community. We should be better; too many in positions of power encourage attacks like this by treating others with hate rather than love. NO ONE should be targeted for who they love, the color of their skin or any other reason.

Also, I'd like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. I hope you are able to spend time with loved ones during the upcoming holiday season. And in light of recent news, please reach out if you need mental health or other support - there are resources available so you don't need to struggle alone.

Here are a few updates:

I was proud to be a sponsor of the City's effort to introduce Restorative Justice to our municipal courts. I am thrilled it is moving forward. Restorative Justice is unique from many other parts of our criminal justice system in that the victim is involved in the outcome and both parties play a role in restoring the harm that was caused.

We have opened up a community survey to provide input. The deadline is November 30 and can be found here.

Residents have made clear that maintenance of residential streets should be a priority.

In response, Council unanimously approved a plan to address all residential street maintenance issues in the City without raising taxes.

Be on the lookout for future work and learn more here.

Full R Line service is expected to resume the week of Nov. 28. Alternative bus and rail routes are available to help people reach their destinations until then.

Over the course of 2022, I co-hosted 8 Gun Buyback Events with Denver CM Amanda Sawyer, RAWTools and the Denver Broncos. I am proud of the work we did in making our communities safer.

Clockwise from top left: at Soccer City Aurora for unveiling of new mural; with Amazon and APS Superintendent Rico Munn building skateboards at East Middle School; with Congressman Jason Crow and Adams County Commissioner Emma Pinter at AEDC's A-List Event; at the Press Conference announcing new Interim Police Chief Art Acevedo.

Here are a few City Council Policy items of note recently:

  1. The City recently hired Art Acevedo as our new Interim Police Chief. Art comes to Aurora after having previously served as Police Chief in Austin, TX, Houston, TX and Miami, FL. Our department has been in flux and increased scrutiny lately and I have confidence that Chief Acevedo is the right leader for the men and women of the Aurora Police Department.

  2. Recently, I brought forward an item to hire an outside consultant to determine locations for Arts and Entertainment venues in Aurora. It's no secret that Aurora is missing out and a City of our size should have facilities on par with our size. This study will look at economic development opportunities, Public-Private financing options and possible locations, as well as what types of venues might work. This was a campaign promise for me and I am glad we are moving forward.

  3. I introduced a resolution to re-name the Aurora City Council Chambers in honor of former Mayor Paul Tauer, who recently passed away after years of service to the City. I am glad my colleagues supported this proposal and I am looking forward to honoring Mayor Tauer's years of service to Aurora.

  4. CM Zvonek recently introduced an item to move forward with an updated master plan for the Fitzsimons medical campus. As a Board Member of the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority, I recognize this campus is a crown jewel in Aurora and unique across the country. By having a defined master plan, we can ensure that future development on the campus is what's best for our city. I am glad to see this move forward.
