Announcements and Awards Congratulations to the Şeker lab on receiving a National Science Foundation award! The Şeker Lab received a National Science Foundation award, titled “Experimental and Computational Study of Pore Morphology Evolution Mechanisms in Nanoporous Metal Thin Films Under Thermal/Electrical/Mechanical Stress Fields”, in collaboration with the Mason Lab. Great job and we look forward to seeing the work that comes out of this award! Many of our students were recently awarded fellowships and scholarships! - Congratulations to Jun Zhu on her recent scholarship! Jun, a PhD candidate in Prof. Srinivasan's lab, has been awarded a 2020 SPIE Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship for her potential contributions to the field of optics, photonics, or related field. Jun encourages other students doing optics related research to apply during the 2021 application cycle. Applications open in October 2020; visit the scholarship page for more info. Congrats, Jun!
- Congratulations to Katie Griffin on receiving the Lodric Maddox Graduate Fellowship! Katie is a dual DVM/PhD student in the Leach Lab working on integrating immunology and tissue engineering. Congratulations on receiving this highly selective fellowship!
- Congratulations to Emmet Francis on receiving a 2020-2021 ARCS Fellowship! ARCS supports scientific scholars throughout the U.S., check out the Northern California chapter's website to learn about ARCS scholars in the Bay Area.
- Congratulations to Alex Vargas on receiving the H. A. Lewin Family Fellowship! This award will help cover research expenses and conference travel, exciting stuff!

2020 Virtual BMEGG Research Symposium |
|
|
May 29 marked the first Virtual BMEGG Research Symposium. We heard several great full and rapid-fire talks from a variety of BMEGG specialties. The conference organizers, Emmet Francis, Marissa Gionet-Gonzales, and Liz Li did a fantastic job organizing this event. Great job to everyone who presented and to the award winners, Abby Niesen (Best Research Presentation) and Jun Zhu (Best Rapid-Fire Presentation)! Also, check out some snapshots from our keynote presentation given by Dr. Joan Greve (NIBIB) and the career panel featuring her alongside Dr. Ella Jones of UCSF, as well as 2 BMEGG alumni, Dr. Zidong Li (Verily) and Dr. Debika Mitra (Profusa). |

To celebrate the end of the month (and the success of the virtual symposium), we got together on Zoom to play some pictionary online. Looking forward to more virtual get-togethers! Thanks to BESA Health for organizing this event! |
