Northern Lights Seen in Sturgis

May 10, 2024 - For most of us, the Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis as it is also known, is something we never thought we'd see in person. Especially not from our homes in Sturgis, MS! However, the night of May 10th surprised most all. Residents and visitors alike were treated to a rare and breathtaking display of the northern lights that could be seen right from our back yards. Typically visible only in high-latitude regions such as Scandinavia, Canada, and Alaska, this natural light show stunned and delighted those fortunate enough to witness it.

The conditions that led to this extraordinary event included a significant solar storm, which increased the intensity and reach of the auroras. Clear skies and minimal light pollution in Sturgis provided the perfect backdrop for the display.

While some of us may never see the Aurora Borealis again, the perfect night in May when we saw God's majesty in the sky is a night we shall never forget.

Resurfacing Parking Spots Downtown along HWY 12

Thank you to the Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors for approving the resurfacing of the parking lot on the Post Office side of Highway 12. The new parking lot will have a designated handicap parking space to better serve the needs of our town. We appreciate the county Road Manager and our supervisors for working with our Post Office and town to complete this project.

Fun Fact:  Most people think Aurora Borealis is the older term for the Northern Lights, but the opposite is true. The name 'Northern Lights' dates back at least 800 years, while the name 'Aurora Borealis' was coined a little over 400 years ago.
