Editorial

Hello Friends

FIRST, you may notice this newsletter looks a little different. We’re trying out a new newsletter distributor. YOUR FEEDBACK IS WANTED! Please respond to the email or contact uuyami@uusf.org with your thoughts.

Now, I am excited to announce that the new UU young adult committee (name coming soon,) has just wrapped up its Mission and Vision process and it is just grand. Read it below.

Bests,
Joe Chapot
Editor of The Sweet Potato
Young Adult Coordinator and Ministerial Assistant
First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

Our mission:

To foster and support inclusive, celebratory, Unitarian Universalist spaces that connect young adults with one another; to recognize intersectional identities and places of privilege and oppression; to create & share resources to build connections, grow community, and actively engage in anti-racist & anti-oppressive efforts around the world while living the seven principles and striving to realize the eighth.

Our Vision:

  • We believe in funding young adult ministry at local, regional and continental levels.
  • We believe in holding spaces for groups centered around marginalized identities.
  • We believe in creating worships & faith experiences with challenging ideas and concepts that nurture spiritual growth.
  • We believe in connecting young adult communities around the world across social platforms.
  • We believe in recognizing the opportunities in our lives to actively engage and participate in social justice efforts that align with our principles and values.
  • We believe in providing space for resources and support to be shared for young adult lay leaders in their communities.
  • We believe in recognizing digital spaces as sacred spaces because they are virtual walls of a church community.
  • We believe that this work is a living process, which we can always revisit and transform.

Gathered Here

Monday, August 31

3:00pm ET/ 12:00pm PT

Questions: uuyami@uusf.org

Gathered Here is a regular online check-in for Canadian Unitarian Universalist young adults (but the American's are welcome!) Join other UU 18-35-year-olds on Zoom (a video-conferencing platform) for sharing of joys and sorrows, deeper check-ins, prayerful reflections, and an opportunity to process current events with a spiritually grounded community.

The global pandemic has made this virtual gathering place more valuable than ever. While so much in our lives is unknown and unknowable, we can find comfort in familiar rituals and faces. By sharing our joys, our concerns, our sorrows and our gratitudes, we know ourselves to be held in a loving community. Exploring the themes and spiritual practices helps us each remember our own creativity and resilience. We are all in this together, a part of a larger story.

These are drop-in style gatherings, so you don’t need to sign up in advance. On the days you want to attend, just settle into a comfortable spot with your computer or smartphone, sign in to Zoom at the scheduled time, and bring your whole self for the hour and a quarter.

For: People Ages 18 to 35
Questions: email uuyami@uusf.org

We’ve done it twice, and who doesn’t like a trilogy, so join us for CONline 3! Once again we will continue the experimental nature of CONline by expanding the event to two days! On Friday we will gather for worship, small groups and FUUN! Then on Saturday we gather for workshops, identity groups, and a talent show! Join us for all or part of CONline 3, registration is open and free!

We are going to have several identity groups at CONline 3 that we hope will become the starting point for more regular meetings. We know many people have more than one marginalized identity, but will only be able to attend one group at CONline 3. If you are willing and comfortable, please indicate which communities you are part of, and the coordinators for these groups will follow up with you after CONline 3 to connect you to them.

It will take many people to make CONline 3 happen, and we know a lot of you want to help.

If you want to staff CONline 3 please indicate so on your registration form.
