Dear Colleague, Welcome to our first newsletter of 2023. We at CCUK are looking forward to sharing with you the events and activities we have planned for the coming months. Here is wishing you all a productive 2023. The year generally starts with good intentions and it can be helpful to review and evaluate activities and projects of the previous year. Reading the SCS Winter 2023 Newsletter we were pleased to receive a testimonial from Emma Meredith Director General at CTPA. Emma's highlight in attending SCS Formulate in November 2022, were the initiatives across CCUK's two pillars, Education and Skills, and Research and Innovation. Emma Meredith Director General at CTPA "Among the presentations I really enjoyed was Dr Gillian Westgate's on how people joined the cosmetics industry and career pathways in the field. And Dr Katerina Steventon on the incredibly interesting outcomes from her Skin Health & Mental Wellbeing project. They are both ongoing initiatives and I look forward to hearing how they progress." We are pleased to introduce Thomas Swan as a new member this month. It's now two years since the start of the pandemic, and we all have felt the value of community and being together in person. We look forward to seeing you all at a CCUK or industry event in 2023. Here is to a year filled with building bridges and expanding our horizons. Best wishes for 2023 Kirsty, Jane, Gill, Alastair, and Katerina |

RE-IMAGINING WASTE: The Upcycled Beauty Company has launched a new zero-waste cosmetic ingredient produced from a by-product of hummus production. On a mission to build a future where all beauty products are made from upcycled ingredients, The Upcycled Beauty Company has launched a brand new, plant-based active ingredient for hair care applications manufactured from a by-product of hummus production. Faba TONIQ® is named after aquafaba, the liquid leftover from cooked chickpeas, and complements the existing range of upcycled water-soluble actives that include Gin TONIQ® and Barley TONIQ®. Harry McIlwraith, General Manager, The Upcycled Beauty Company, shares his passion for upcycling. “Approximately 12 million tonnes of chickpeas are produced every year, and the ever-growing popularity of hummus is prompting more and more manufacturers to yield the crop. But with mass production, comes waste. By identifying an industry that creates unused waste products, we work to help beauty and personal care brands transition towards a circular economy.” – - please contact hello@upcycledbeauty.com. Congratulations, Orean Personal Care, on achieving B Corp certification. Recently interviewed for Cosmetics Business Dan Williams Managing Director and CEO of Orean shares why B Corp was an important step, “Over the past ten years we’ve defined and refined our mission statement to provide the most desirable contract manufacturing experience to our staff, to our customers, and to our suppliers. What’s become apparent is how aligned we are with B Corp, so we’ve been encouraged to go down that path. “It’s been 1.5 years in the making, but I’m now delighted to announce that we’ve been recognised as a B Corp business.” B Corp is a certification that meets the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. Laura Kirkbride, Orean’s Technical Director, shares the challenge of B Corp certification. “We’ve gone through a quite intense but very rigorous assessment. “It didn’t just look at how eco are we, ‘what are we doing from an energy input perspective’, for example, or ‘what welfare package do we have for our staff’. “It covered all aspects of the business – a really in-depth look at what we’re doing.” |
