Join us for our monthly meeting to discuss upcoming events!

BESA Berryessa Hike and Brew

Saturday, Nov. 9, 10 a.m.

BESA will be hiking the Homestead-Blue Ridge Trail, a 5-mile loop west of Winters. This is a steep trail but will be well worth it for the views of Lake Berryessa! Afterwards, we’ll be rendezvousing at Berryessa Brewing. We will plan to meet at GBSF at 10 a.m. and carpool for the 30 minute drive to the trailhead. Feel free to join for the hike, the brewery, or both! RSVP HERE. Email Rachel with any questions. We hope to see you there!

BESA San Francisco Trip

Saturday, Nov. 16

BESA is planning to hit the big city. We'll be going to the Exploratorium and Tactile Dome (among other things), so it should be a good time! RSVP here. Email Laney with any questions.

Surviving and Thriving in Grad School

Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 3-4 p.m. in GBSF 2202

Hear from a panel of senior graduate students about the challenges of their grad school experience and some of their strategies for success. Any topics or questions you might have to discuss are welcome. If you or one of your colleagues is graduating within this academic year and would like to participate in this event as a panelist, please email Laney.

BESA Coffee Hour

Thursday, Nov. 21 from 2-3 p.m. in GBSF 2202

Come along for coffee and conversation with Dr. Kent Leach. This coffee hour will focus on careers in academia and the skills students can develop in grad school to get there.

BESA Outreach Opportunities

We have several upcoming outreach opportunities. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact the outreach officers at besaoutreach@ucdavis.edu.

  • Sheldon High School Guest Panel: We are seeking volunteers to speak on a panel about college/graduate school, research, and science in general. We will be going either Nov. 18, 19, or 21; please let us know when you are free by signing up for a slot here!
  • Thanksgiving Volunteering: We need 10 volunteers to help cook a Thanksgiving meal at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church this year from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on November 28th. If you're interested, please sign up here!
  • BMES Make-a-thon, Jan. 17-19: The undergraduate student group (BMES) is looking for mentors for their annual Medical Make-a-Thon in which 15 teams of 5 are presented with a clinical problem and have 48 hours to design, prototype, and possibly test their medical devices. If you're interested in helping, please contact Anirudh Devathi Rajan or Shilpi Kalra.

Announcements

Congratulations to Kevin Campbell and Marissa Gionet-Gonzales for receiving the Richard and Joy Dorf Engineering Graduate Fellowship!

Congratulations to Prof. Randy Carney on his recent grant! Dr. Carney was recently awarded the American Cancer Society (ACS) Research Scholar Grant – a 4-year early career award – for his project, "SERS platform for liquid biopsy analysis of extracellular vesicles." Great job, and we look forward to seeing what comes out of this exciting work.

BESA is making moves to support graduate student mental health. A team of BESA members is currently planning a series that includes discussions and activities, led either by us or by Student Health and Counseling professionals on campus, that center around promoting mental health. If you're interested in being a part of this group, as either a planner or a participant, please email Laney.

Announcing our keynote speaker for the 2020 BMEGG Symposium: Prof. Joan Greve. This year we will welcome Prof. Joan Greve from the University of Michigan as our keynote speaker. Her research focuses on using preclinical imaging (primarily MRI) to look at vascular biology in a number of organ systems. She is also incredibly dedicated to mentorship and instruction. We look forward to hearing from her at both our Thursday seminar and the keynote presentation on Friday morning! Be sure to have this year's symposium on your calendar: Friday May 29, 2019, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the UC Davis Conference Center.

Request for comment on Proposal to Consolidate the BMEGG into a BME Department-based Graduate Program. The BME Department Executive Committee is considering transitioning BMEGG into a department-based graduate program. Information on the transition can be found here. The Executive Committee welcomes any feedback on the proposal; you can share comments regarding the proposal here no later than Nov. 12.

Other Events

Biology and Mathematics in the Bay Area (BaMBA) Meeting

Saturday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Jack Baskin School of Engineering, Room 152, UC Santa Cruz

BaMBA is a one-day conference that explores the role of mathematics in biology in an informal and collegial atmosphere. Going beyond traditional applied mathematics, topics include applications of algebraic, topological, statistical and computational methods. The goal is to encourage dialogue between researchers and students from different disciplines to promote the open exchange of scientific ideas and viewpoints. In addition to the four invited lectures, this year we will have a diversity panel and a poster session. Register here and visit the website for more information!
