....or offered another LKN Travel Scholarship |
We had an unexpected number of quality applications for the "Lymphedema Practitioner Training Scholarship for Allied Health Professionals in the Asia Pacific Region". The 2024 Scholarship funds the travel and accommodation for a Health Professional living and working in the Western Pacific region, to attend an accredited Lymphoedema training program in Auckland in September. |
Adrian Lim, a Manila Physiotherapist, was our first LKN Scholarship Recipient, attending the Lymphoedema Management training Program in Perth in 2023. As well as offering lymphoedema care in his clinic, Adrian has presented on lymphoedema management to several institutions and allied health teams in the Philippines. |
Adrian has also paid his scholarship forward in other ways, playing a crucial role in facilitating a Medical Team from Bohol Province, an LF-endemic island in the Philippines, to attend the recent Manila Lymphology Courses. |
Such support is essential for regional therapists where qualified Health Professionals typically earn less than $50 per week. Without this assistance, access to such high-level training would be unattainable. Manila Scholarships were provided by Brainery PH, a Integrative Therapies Training Company. |
"I am forever grateful to Brainery for the scholarship. I'm working in a government hospital were most of our patients cannot afford MLD. Now I can provide the treatment they need." Ma. Lelette T. Navarro, PT. Surigao del Sur. |
The LKN Scholarship aims to train eligible Health Professionals in LF-endemic countries in comprehensive lymphoedema management. The 2024 Scholarship is offered in conjunction with Moving Lymph Pty Ltd and Lymph Therapies NZ who are donating a fee free place in the training program. |
The LKN Board continue to advance our broader goals, and the following are just some of our current activities. |
LKN Workshop at the 2024 COR-NTD Regional Meeting |
The Centre for Operational Research on NTDs now holds annual meetings for regional Program Managers, and LKN was invited to present a Workshop on the Enhanced-care protocol at the inaugural Western Pacific meeting in Sydney last year. |
We've been invited to host another Workshop this year in Brisbane, where we will share our vision for creating personalised self-care videos that can be accessed by anyone. |
This years' Workshop will; explore how we can integrate online and digital resources in to existing National LF Programs, and discuss the role of social media in raising community awareness and counteracting misinformation and superstition about lymphoedema. |
WHO Working Group on Wound-care in Skin-NTDs |
Jan and Tricia are core members of the Skin-NTD Wounds Care Working Group, where they are contributing directly to the development of a WHO Online Module on Enhanced Lymphedema Self-Care. |
With just a handful of private donations and countless volunteer hours, we've achieved a lot! But to be sustainable we need ongoing donations, so we've launched a Sponsorship Program for Australian Health Professionals. |
Clinical Sponsorship Program |
This fundraising initiative aims to link people affected by lymphoedema in Australia with people managing the same condition but without access to specialty services in LF- and podoconiosis-endemic countries. |
Sponsoring lymphoedema clinics donate either 50 cents or $1 from each treatment fee to LKN, and receive a tax deduction each month based on their total contributions. |
Involving Specialist Lymphoedema Therapists in this way will also help raise lymphoedema awareness everywhere, highlighting the issues that are common to everyone whether they live in Toorak Gardens or the outer regions of Ethiopia. |
$1 may not seem like much, but it can buy a lot of soap and massage oil in most LF-endemic countries. We are very grateful to our inaugural Clinical Sponsors, The Lymph Place in Adelaide, and the Illawarra Lymphoedema Clinic, Pt Kembla. |

We've come a long way from the original RCT's in Ethiopia and Bangladesh, and we've had a lot of support from stakeholders in the global efforts to eliminate LF as a public health problem. |
For all we have achieved, it is still only a drop in the ocean toward to this huge unmet need. We believe that by producing freely accessible digital tools, we can exponentially spread good quality information on lymphoedema home-care for a very low cost to donors, and #LeaveNoOneBehind |
