August 2021 Newsletter

As we slip into September, I reflect on the whirlwind of activities that have and are occurring.  As I write this, the Airola Fire is under control with a containment line around it and firefighters are working at putting out the hot spot fires.  There were 345 personnel assigned.  This has been a reminder for each of us to have plans and to sign up for Calaveras Alert.

🌲  Stanislaus National Forest

Due to fire conditions, weather and a shortage of firefighting resources, there is a ban on campfires and recreational target shooting.  No wood or charcoal fires are allowed anywhere on the forest, including all forest campgrounds, developed sites and wilderness areas.  Lawful hunting will continue.

🦠  COVID-19

Almost 48% of Calaveras residents have been vaccinated.  Public Health is in the process of having the mobile vaccination van also do testing.  To find a location go to: https://covid19.calaverasgov.us/

🚧  Bridges and Roads

Blagen Road Repair has finally started.  It involves the removal of the temporary bridge and installation of a new culvert.  It will restore the roadway to its pre-disaster condition.  Blagen Road will be closed at “E” Street in White Pines from September 7 to October 2.  The detour will be provided on Forest Service Road #5N55.  This is an unpaved service road, narrow and no turnouts available.  Since most of you are mountain drivers, I know you can manage this.

K. W. Emerson is the construction contractor, a local company.

Monge Ranch Road Bridge is in final stage of a right-of-way agreement.  Once this is complete, the Board will adopt the plans and specifications this fall, then to Cal Trans for construction funds, and hopefully to construction in 2022.  Hopefully is always the operative term.

Highway 4 Murphys Turn Lane is still on schedule to be completed toward the end of October.  The crews are now conducting drainage excavation on the shoulders.

Murphys speed survey will be conducted on Main Street in several locations.  This came about from the Murphys Community Club hosted community meeting.  There are several options to possibly reduce speed, humps, bumps, rumble strips (need signs), digital signs, raised islands, varying road surfaces, 3D road markings, etc.  After the survey is complete, in about 3 weeks, we will have a community meeting to discuss options.

🌱  Cannabis

The Board amended 17.95 of the County Code to include cannabis activities of distribution and testing.  These require a State permit and a County permit.  There are now over 60 legal grow sites.  The illegal grow sites continue to be a problem; the Sheriff’s Marijuana Unit is continually eradicating the illegal sites.  We received $2,467,236 in Cannabis tax in 2020/2021.

🐶  Animal Shelter

Funds are being allocated to start the plans and maybe infrastructure on a new shelter.  The Board allocated $600k, and I so appreciate Board support on this.  Went on a tour of the Tuolumne Animal Shelter as it is a metal building, which is an option for our shelter.
